Salut Eric.

I'm stumped: your java looks to be pooched, and yet it won't allow a reinstall!

Maybe this old and outdated Apple technote for fixing a java install will help with some other ideas http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2099.html

It does mention "navigate to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/
Move the version.plist file to the Trash"

Maybe the version.plist needs to be trashed too?

(sorry about the console idea--I'd forgotten about your earlier post)

Default Java re-install

Salut encore Stief,

You're a bit like me, never in bed late at night...???

Thanks for the link, I'll see what can be done even if it's an out dated procedure. I'll try to find that plist file and fiddle around that.

I just posted on Apple the same console log to see if anybody there as an other idea or can confirm the Java thing...
Salut

My thoughts are to install the 10.3.8 Combo. Then try again with LW ... if still no go, then try again with the Java installer.

Default 10.3.8

Hi again,

I do have the 10.3.8 combo installed since quite a while...

Waiting to see if anyone at Apple will reply to my Java problem...

I see there's no answer yet, but following some links led to http://developer.apple.com/java/faq/

I couldn't find any better suggestions than "Archive and Install," even after finding the thread at http://lists.apple.com/archives/java.../msg00798.html (I think you can login there).

Sorry. Hope your evening works out (it's morning here).

Default java woes...

Well, still no answer from the Apple Forum...
I did go there quite a few times and always got suggestions/answers relatively quickly. This is the first time no one has anything to say. Not even "It can't be done"...

From the links you suggested, this one says that Java1.4.2 can't be removed:

Mac OS X Panther initially shipped with installations of J2SE 1.3.1 and 1.4.1. Java 1.4.2 Update 2 is now available for Mac OS X Panther v10.3.4 and later, based on the J2SE 1.4.2_05 SDK. It includes improved behavior for applets in Safari, and increased stability for desktop Java applications, including all of the improvements in 1.4.2 Update 1. Please note that 1.4.2 Update 2 completely replaces the current Java 1.4 implementation on Panther systems (1.4.1 or 1.4.2), and is not removable once installed.

The other post talks about trying to fool the system "receipts" and re-installing. Well I've got three choices.

1- Delete Java completely (empty trash) and try again to re-install (got it on a back up anyway)
2- Archive & Install and re-install LW
3- Go without LW until the next version (I have a feeling it won't work since the previous versions didn't)

So I'll wait a bit in case something else comes up and if it doesn't, well, I'll have to go with re-installing OSX...
Will post back with any results
See you all and thanks !!!

Hmmm--why not try and see if other java apps work?
http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest uses a java applet, Azureus runs on java, and maybe there are apps you could try. Does the java web start program, for example (in the Utilities folder) work?

Default Java test...

Salut Stief,

BAM !!! you're on to something.

1- Applet Launcher, Input Method Hotkey, Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings and Java Web Start.... don't start !!!!!

2- Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings works..... (what in hell does it do or what can I do with it ???)

3- Testing the Java Applets with the link you provided, when I click on verify your Java version, I get a page with the coffee cup a couple of seconds worth, the HD crunching then Safari quits...
Tried it with IE, and It worked but told me as a result that: JVM check passed, using 1.3.1 by Apple computer, inc. No mention of 1.4.2 !!!

So I think my 1.4.2v2 is good for the dogs...
What do you think ???

Looks like Archive and Install I'm afraid. (:

Oh well--at least now you know your system needs it anyways.

Default Bummer !!!

Yeah, I guess I don't have a choice.

I would of preffered to just replace the Java package but eh, the problem seems found and will be resolved (not tonite cause I'm beat now).

Will just visit Apple a short while to report what was found here (great, great help from you guys, specially you Stief, thanks !!!) and once done, (the archive & install) will post back here for results on the LW install...

I have a feeling all will go OK now.

Good night all, see you soon
Eric
