Default Itunes files gone!!!

I'm having the same problem as slayergal: since using limewire, all of the songs previously purchased from iTunes and listed in my iTunes library (they are still listed in the library...just not usable) give an error when I try to open them ("the song 'X' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?") - but I've looked everywhere the "yes" button on the error message sends me, and although I find itunes folders, the songs I'm looking for aren't in them. I even tried. I even tried the suggestions in the reply to slayergal's post, but not being very computer savvy, it had the same result. I'll probably need someone to walk me thru a solution step by step. I'm desparate, as I had a lot of songs in the library. There are still a few things left in my library that are usable, and they all seem to be whole albums that I purchased; individualy purchased songs and songs downloaded from a friend's computer aren't usable. PLEASE HELP!!

Use your search engine (command & S keys) & search for .mp3 & then .m4a & see if you find files located in locations other than what you expected. Also check that your iTunes is automatically importing the songs. Go to iTunes preferences>Advanced tab>General & make sure the option is ticked for Import songs to iTunes music library when adding to iTunes. Otherwise, your songs will not be added to iTunes music library folders. And if that happens, then they will simply act as a reference to the original location. If you later move or delete the song files from that location then iTunes won't be able to find them & you'll get the type of errors you're receiving.
