kml636 make sure you use Safari to downld LW. You can find it in your Applications folder. Dial up shouldn't make any difference. But perhaps leave your computer alone until it's finished downlding. If you have a different HDD or partition, try downlding it there instead. Otherwise make sure you're downlding it to your user account ... not someone elses or the system or main library folders. And you'll probably also need system permission to install it ... as in being the admin of the computer.

(BTW do you know anything about applescript?)

Like svfdfc, at first mine was reporting an error after only downloading part way, but now its downloading in entirety and then giving me the same "mounting error- file not recognized". I'm the admin of the computer... I'm not familiar with applescript but am willing to try. Thanks again for your help! I'm thinking of calling apple support, not sure if they will help or not.

kml636 I've sent you the LW 4.9.41 version as a SIT archive. All you need to do is drag & drop it onto StuffIt Expander & it will uncompress it. Then just double-click installer. There's no dmg file concerned.
