I didn't ask you earlier how much free HDD space you have & how much ram. Under apple icon on toolbar, you'll see an option either called About this mac or System profiler. Select it & then select More info ... And that will show you your hardware set up.

For most programs, OSX system will give each program as much ram & Virtual memory as they need at a given moment. In most cases there's no way to control this (unlike in OS 9 & earlier.) Virtual Memory (VM) btw is when ram is stored on the hard disk drive (HDD) instead of actively in ram. LW tends to use a lot of VM.

not sure where the warning is coming from- will check the next time it appears- but I was running Classic 9 - on which I have my old photoshop - as well as LW on OS X so maybe that did it- ;-)
Also, my download window now predicts it's going to take 4 minutes to finish downloading LW.dmg (from the official site - just in case the version I got and paid for has issues - whereas before it was predicting 20 hours!!! Weird!!!!

here's the info on the memory..(attached) is that ok?
I usually just use my mac for the net and some basic stuff - but then I was spending most of my time in an office...
will using LW overcrowd my HDD memory then? any place I can store downloads that will do less damage?

Classic mode can use a lot of resources. So it may slow your system down a little.

As far as helping goes ... some of us spend many, many hours online. (We're all volunteers! Not enough pay for us!)

I have 2 internal HDD's which are all partitioned. I save my downlds on a different partition to the OSX system drive. If you have a 2nd drive then that might be a good move. Otherwise just be careful. BTW you can check how much RAM & VM LW is using by opening the Activity Monitor which is found in the Utilities folder.

As for port forwarding. The instructions I have are for windows so I'd need to improvise a little with OSX instructions for setting up a static ip which is required for port forwarding. But it would still be extra helpful if you could find out the model number of the device. I presume it's listed in the 1st section of the info about device. Click on the + sign to open up more options.
Also look for UPnP in the routing section.

768 MB ram is ok. I have twice that amount but it was on special at the time I bought my G4. By the looks of your ram type, are you running a G3 or G4 or earlier possibly? What's the speed of your computer?
You have 58% idle ram in that image which is quite ok. Perhaps close/force quit the classic environment whilst you're using LW. I've also noticed odd things about starting LW whilst having classic mode running. Yet I'm running Tiger OSX.

G4... but things are not good- I've shut Classic 9 and restarted the computer... It now says I have 1.74 GB free on HD! and things are slower believe me!
I tried opening the activity monitor again but it just won't - maybe not even enough start up memory to do that left...
Plus I have no idea who can sell me more memory here - we've just arrived....
I've also shut down LW for now.
Any ideas....?

Erm ... 1.74 GB is definitely not enough. And that's probably why you're running into problems. Next time you reboot, check how much OSX space is available with no applications running. Perhaps it's time to make space. I had to do that also. I ended up moving many programs onto a different partition (those that allow it ... some demand to be run from the OSX system partition.) Or moving some of your other files off to make space. An external drive is good for backup. I have 2 internal 120 GB drives, 2 x 250 & 1 x 160 GB external drives. And about 200+ dvd-rw disks. lol eg: I moved my iTunes library onto an external drive. My iTunes Library is about 90 GB now!

You might also want to consider this: Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! which I apply now & again but only very selectively only. That's because I'm after very rare files.

Attached? ... you're obviously editing in the attachments after posting.

BTW I'm going offline soon! Too much work & no play makes tom a ..
