Limewire Troubles

I have been trying for over a year to connect to Limwire through my current internet connection, and I have not once been successful.

I have a iMac G5, OSX Tiger(10.4), NOT intel, with a NETGEAR router, which I think may be my main problem. Limewire says it detects a firewall(planet with a brick wall behind it), and I am assuming that it is referring to an internal firewall of the NETGEAR router.

If anyone can help me out, it would be greatly appretiated.

*In the Limewire troubleshooting directory mentioning how to let Limewire run by configuring the OSX firewall, It says to pull the dropdown menu to Gnutella/ Limwire - I have no such option, and I have no idea what numbers to put in when I choose "other" and it asks for the TCP port numbers, and the other ones.

In LW, go tools > options > advanced > firewall config. In the top right corner, you'll see the port number LW's listening on (the default port is 6346). See if the thread below's any help & use the listening port number that you've seen in your LW for TCP & UDP settings.

If your Netgear supports UPnp, enable it within the router & then use that option within the LW options page where you found the listening port. Click apply & ok to save any changes:) You might have to give LW a little time to settle down before you see a change.

If the enabling UPnP is no good, you might need to port forward. If your router's listed at the site below, you'll find instructions for port forwarding. Don't forget the setting up a static IP step, if it's part of the instructions!

You'll find some more info about UPnP & port forwarding within the thread below
Connection problems? Check here first!

Apologies if I've missed anything Mac-specific...I'm a Windows user:o
Otherwise, wait until a Mac guru comes along!!

I don't know how to access or modify my router settings, which is quite an inconvenience.

Do you mean that you don't know how to log into your router?
Try typing 192.168.0.1 into your browser's address bar. By default the Netgear username is admin & the password is password.

Have you done this test & does it work?

For OSX, the LW preferences are found under the LimeWire name at top of menu bar next to apple icon. Keyboard short-cut is apple command - comma (,)

Most likely the problem is your device. Follow birdy's advice about telnetting into it using your browser. You will find a UPnP option there somewhere which should be enabled. Save settings. Then restart LW.

Thanks for all of the help, guys, but I found out that my ISP is blocking access to the Limewire ports for bandwidth purposes.

Thanks again,

Lord Falcon
