Question downloaded files do not retain actual file name and creator code

I recently partitioned my hard disk to be LinuxPPC compatible. Now when I dload using LW the files are not saved with entire name. Does this have something to do with Mac Standard and Mac HFS+ file systems or is it just a quirk that I can fix easily.
