Classic Mac Installation Problems

Help -

I was asked to upgrade my paid copy of limewire to the most recent version. When I installed and restarted, I clicked the new icon and got a system 1 error. I then gave it more memory and updated the java applet and dumped the new installed version of Limewire and again restarted. - Same error and cannot get onto Limewire.

At wits end - Help.

Hello!

You have encountered a classic Mac OS error code. It is very common. Here is what it means and how to fix it:

Type 1 error (Bus Error)

One of the most common indications of a memory-related error. It means that you tried to access an non-existent/inaccessible memory address.

Common causes and solutions: Init/Extension or Control Panel conflict. insufficient memory for the operation being attempted, you could try allocating more memory to the application.

However you should not have allocated more memory for LimeWire itself. It is a Java application and will allocate the amount of memory it needs so it works differently to what you are used to when it comes to Classical Mac OS applications. However what you should allocate more memory to is Apple MRJ(Java applet runner) JRE 1.1.8. First make sure that you are using the latest version which should be 2.2.5 if not then you have to download it and install it and then uninstall everything LW on your computer and then once again reinstall LW again so that it will install itself when the new Java has been installed. Then allocate more memory to MRJ I would recommend a maximum setting of 32000 and leave the minimum value unchanged. Re-start your Mac after this and then once again connect to the Internet and try to Launch LW. It should work now.

If not the maybe you have to little physical RAM installed in your computer. For maximum performence you as a Classical mac OS user should have 320MB of physical RAM and Virtual memory Turned OFF. If you have less physical RAm you could still run LW but you may have to allocate more HD space as VM.

Here is the link to MRJ 2.2.5. It will begin downloading as soon as you click the link.
