Default limewire document

EVERYTHING that I download comes out as a limewire document. I've screwed with various file exchange and quicktime settings. I haven't seen a single post that answers my problem. this program is useless to me unless I can access the files that I've downloaded. I'm running mac OS 8.6 on a G3 machine, limewire is 3.8.8 pro.
thanks, I hope.

Default pro help indeed

so far the only response I've gotten is "if you're running OS 9.1 ... " . my reply to their "help" has so far gone unanswered. I've sent them a second message. lets hope for better results.

I think a dl comes as a limewire document when the file your dling as a name of more than 31 caracters (the limit for os 9 is 31 caracters, 256 for os x) just be sure tu add the right extension to the file (.mp3 if music, .avi or .mpg if movie etc....) OR try to open the files within the apps you suspect they would run (i.e. iTunes for music).

Sorry, Os9 is showing it's age... (don't you feel the os x appeal ).

Bonne chance

Most of the advice for OS 9 works for OS 8.6. If your file names are short enough (thanks et voilà) and your Finder still thinks the files belong to LW, rebuild the Mac OS 8.6's invisible desktop.db file.

The free TechTool Lite is probably the easiest way to rebuild your desktop if you don't want to go through holding down command-option just before the hard drive loads after a restart. Plus, TTLite used to have an option to revert the rebuild.

Just curious--when was the last time the desktop was rebuilt?

Default thanks

thanks for the help
it seems a rebuild/name shortening is working now. I tried the file name shjortening earlier, with no results. after the rebuild (and a pram zap) things seem to be in working order. as for LW PRO HELP, they have successfully ignored my last three messages sent to them. I'm left wondering why I shelled out any money for this damned frustrating product. I'd love to lambaste LW (mostly for their "support"), but I doubt 90% of the words would reach the reading public.
again thanks.

btw, as far as I know, the desktop had never been rebuilt on this machine.

I never had much luck with Pro Support, but the forum folks here really helped me. To be fair though, some report that Pro Support works, even though $20 tech support should only be worth--what?--15 minutes tech-time?

Anyway, since LW is also an open source project, I still consider Pro to be a donation. Much more satisfying, and a lot less frustrating.

The key for Mac OS users, is that LW is the only major p2p client still supporting them. Even though I happily switched to OSX 1 1/2 hrs ago, some of my friends are still happy with 8.6 machines (damn but those machines just keep on going!), and so LW gets my loyalty on their behalf. Don't know how much longer they can keep on going though--Java keeps upgrading and cutting Classic out of lots of goodies.

If a friend needs Classic tune-up, rebuilding the desktop is always part of the job.
