How much free space do you have on your hard drive?

924.2 mb.

MRJ 2.2.6 too, if that helps.

MRJ 2.2.6 is an upgrade to MRJ 2.2.5 which provides fixes that allow Oracle 11i client applications to communicate with Oracle's application servers over HTTPS. It is recommended that you only update to MRJ 2.2.6 if you need to use Oracle 11i client applications over HTTPS and that your Oracle software is properly configured to support HTTPS communication with Mac OS 9 clients.

So, if you aren't using Oracle, the recommended MRJ 2.2.5 is available here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75097
Might be worthwhile too to do a complete search for any LimeWire pieces and try a fresh install.

You have enough HD space, so that's not the problem, unless it is an external or 3rd party drive. It's been a while since I worked with 8.6, so sorry if these are wild guesses and not much help. Isn't there a General Control Panel option to "protect" the Applications folder? Maybe that would make the installer think the folder was locked.

Do post back with whatever works--not many use 8.6 these days

i checked the general controls panel, and protect applications folder and protect systems folder were unchecked. I decided to remove mrj 2.2.6, so i deleted apple extras/mac os java runtime (or whatever the folder was). i installed MRJ 2.2.5, and limewire installed and it works now.

thanks for the help.
