Question convert avi to mpeg/mpg

AVI files do not work on my Limewire Pro 4.12, nor my previous Limewire 4.9 on my MAC iBook.
I can download avi files but they do not open or work like mpg files. Is there any way to convert avi files to mpg/mpeg files?
Is there software to convert avi files to mpg/mpeg files or is there an adjustment that I can make to my current Limewire Pro 4.12 to convert avi to mpg/mpeg?
Please provide feedback if you have an answer to converting avi files to mpg/mpeg, if indeed it is possible at all.
Thank you very much for your feedback. Greg.

Instead of trying to convert the files to a different format, try the VLC player first, as it has all the neccessary codecs already installed to veiw just about any format available....

I downloaded the VLC player but I'm not sure how to use it, yet. I'll have to download an AVI file and see if my Limewire can open/read the new file.

Thank you, Greg

I'm not a mac user, so I cant tell you how to set the VLC player as your default player...But I'm sure a Mac expert will help you shortly....

You'll need to change the default of avi to VLC for opening. Quite easy. Have a look at this post & it's sample image link http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...54&postcount=2

I'm not sure which does what but if you install both of these apps (I think they are free) you can view many file types in QT and Safari like avi, wmv etc. that were a hassle before. I have not tested playing within Limewire but I bet if it plays on QT it will play in Limewire.
