Mac OS9 (LW 4.08 or 4.07)
 

I have copies of LW 4.08 (free version) and 4.07 (registered) on my Mac OS 9.2.2 machine. I haven't used LW for several months on the Mac. It was working fine. Today it is having connection issues.

I've been using LW on a Windows machine OK, and can connect OK with that through my router and DSL modem. I cannot see any problems with the router that may cause connection problems.

What appears to be happening is that LW on the Mac OS 9 machine is launching, it phones home to see if there is a newer version, and I click 'no' as the OS9 systems are no longer supported.

It checks my shares and I can see them coming up on the Windows system interestingly enough so it ios sharing the titles outbound.

However I cannot get a connection to search or connect to anything.

I am using the default port (6346) as always and as noted, nothing changed on the router or on the Mac. Just a period of nono-use.

It appears that maybe it cannot see the network to connect. By any chance was there a change in the files that look for the network connections?

I'm getting this behavior with both version 4.07 (registered) and 4.08 (free).

I managed to get the set-up wizard to run a couple of times as if it was a fresh install but that didn't seem to make any difference.

The version I am running on the Windows system is running.

Any suggestions on getting it running on the older Mac again? I have MRJ 225 installed and that should be fine. 226 is only necessary if you are running some older Oracle stuff.

Each LW needs a separate port.

Try connecting when the Win box isn't running, or change the port the Wind box uses.

If I recall correctly, trying to change the port on the OS 9 version of LW was quite difficult.

I fiddled with just about everything and even downloaded an old copy of 4.07 from a link I found here in the forum and tried a fresh installation. Still no go. It was clear that it was phoning home to see if there was a new version but I could not get to connect to any peers.

So, on a lark, I dug down to a known-good back-up from a CD and used that to replace the prefs files in the ".limewire" folder in System Prefs, and to be on the safe side I also copied over the MRJ library files from known goods because some of the error messages were pointing in that direction.

Not sure which it was, but replacing both of those seems to have corrected the problem.

Neither the copy of Norton Utilities or Disk First Aid that I have turned up anything bad in the files so replacing Prefs and the MRJ Libs were my next choice, along with a fresh install. Since the install didn't fix it, the next step was that

So its working now. Still not sure which file was corrupted.

I wish I could get it to stop phoning home for a new version as that is a waste of time for the OS9 version that is no longer supported.

Re the update checking--is the tool->options->check for updates preference available in 4.0.7?

I'd check, but am too lazy to dig out an OS 9 computer from the garage ;)

No, unfortunately, it appears to be hard-coded in this version. No check box anywhere in Prefs to shut that off.

i'm using Mac OS 9.2 and have been installing and uninstalling LW all morning - no connections coming up.... will use this thread as a guide and update you on my status.

still no luck
 

using OS 9.2 still, downloaded LW 4.0.10 and no connections coming up... restarted and everything... unloaded all the old LW software...

got a broadband connection coming through an airport card - it's an open signal at the local college... old versions of limewire would at least attempt to connect to peers, but this version won't even attempt... not sure what the firewall is because it's not my ISP... checking out other posts re: listening on different ports....will update as I progress... anyone with suggestions please post..... thanks

My first concern would be where you are connecting from. In recent years most colleges have been putting in some kind of limiting or prevention safeguards against their students using p2p sharing programs eating the college's expensive bandwidth. They use different techniques; some being blocking ports, some being protocol or program identification & blocking or limiting them.

But yes, also the college will have their own firewalls & NAT systems & you will have no control over those.

Have you tried Force ip option within LW? Also the option of proxies? A good range of ports to use are 49152 - 65535. These are usually the last to be blocked. However if using a proxy, the proxy itself might have certain requirements. From what I've been told, proxies are always hit and miss. Perhaps only a small % that actually work for p2p sharing (and even those can be slow).

Glad to see you're following what's going on with the forum - appreciate the quick reply. Yes, I figured the college's setup had something to do with it. They must have upgraded their system and taken action to prevent p2p. Tried force IP and got nothing. Researching proxies is taking a bit of time.... I've tried a few different combinations... It appears I need a server number and a proxy number in order to complete the appropriate fields.... Nothing has worked so far. I might just have to settle for no limewire at home, unless there are more effective programs.

Have you checked the proxy types & options suggested here: A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 - 3 which have links to alternative instructions. Page 2 in particular I listed some mentioned around the forums. ;)

But still, very hit n miss from what I've heard.

Os9 Will Not Connect
 

My main MAC bought the "big ONE", so now, I have to use my old laptop.

I used to use OS9 several years ago and there were quite a few areas that had to be "turned off".

Right now, I have reinstalled everything, but even with a dozen items in the SHARED folder, the application will not CONNECT. also, when I go to the FINDER, the whole app. QUITS.

Are there any incomplete download files? If yes, perhaps move them out. Or copy the complete incomplete folder elsewhere, then empty the one that LW is using. Too many incomplete files might affect it connecting.

However, I suspect your gnutella.net file is most likely out of date. See about half way down this page: If LW 4 Will Not Connect (click on the blue link) :) LW must be closed when you replace that gnutella.net file. Oh .. you will find LW preferences folder at Macintosh HD/System Folder/Preferences/.limewire. It's a good idea to view the preferences folder in List mode. Then LW will be at the very top of the list. ;)

Also, when you open LW, for OS 9 it's best to set it to only connect manually. (I cannot remember where the setting is, perhaps in preferences under a setting called Connections.) Wait 5 mins for it to load, then go to File menu & choose Connect. That used to work fine for me. :)

Some versions of LW 4.0.x worked well for some & not others. I know myself I had problems connecting with one version but connected well with others. So .. if it comes to that, there is a post on these forums with links to some other LW 4.0.x versions.

I do still have LW 4.0.x on my old mac under OS 9. But haven't used that LW in probably well over a year.

Still NO GO! I guess I'll try to reinstall. I've dowloaded the "current" INSTALLER. Perhaps that will help.

However, I tried 4.0.2 & 4.0.7 & neither connected. I replaced the gnutella.net file & 4.0.10 the last OS 9 version connected quickly after I used the Connect command from File menu.

I was unable to download the gnutella.net file from OS 9, my browsers were not liked by those sites. If you like, I could host that gnutella.net file I used though it will either be identical or almost the same as the one I originally downloaded.
