Can't play MPEG Download

Some MPEG video's I downloaded cannot be played and I get a message from quicktime that says file can't be translated (or played for that matter) because of error 2003. some MPEGS download just fine and I've even gotten a couple that at first did not work to work using Snitch to change the file type and creator. This didn't work with other files. Any suggestions?
