Autoconnect vs. manual adding

I don't really understand how auto connect works.

Does my connection improve if I from time to time uncheck autoconnect and add servers manually? I've got the impression that I get more hosts shortly after making a manual addition. But maybe that's only me imagining things.

Does anybody know?

Also I wonder, what's the significance of the 3-4 servers in the Gnutella-net window. What's the reason for them being there? I mean, I am connected to more than 3 other servers, right? So what's the deal with that?

And why does servers I've added manually always go away after a while?

I'd really like to know how these things work.
