HOW do you connect with specific friends?

I can't figure out how to connect personally with friends so i can share my files with them... Even a friend that lives close by can't seem to search for any files that I have!...is this possible?

I would like to know if this is possible too! Can I connect *directly* to a friend's computer? If not with Mactella, what is a method of doing this that doesn't use a central server?
