Morpheus 1.3.3.1 preview

i just tried it and it's obvious that they used gnucleus source.
i was wondering if swabby was aware of that all the time.
if yes, did they help you somehow with gnucleus?
if no, are you going to do something about that?

shouldn't morpheus post their source code if they used GPL'd project?
and i might be blind, but i couldn't find any mention of gnucleus in this version of morpheus...

Morgwen March 2nd, 2002 02:56 AM

Hmm...

Gnucleus is open source so everybody can use the source!

Swabby canīt do anything against this!

Morpheus have to release their source too... also if they add new technics...

They donīt need to mention Gnucleus or swabby in the client itself - they have to do it in source!

well there only seems to be 2 difernces to me between the two

1) the icons for conect/preferences etc wich are much sexier - (they are easier to decipher)

2) the adition of the adverts and web stuff etc wich sucks.

it seems a bit cheeky to me to just to use gnucleus like this but i
i wonder if are they going to keep up with any new features/improvemnets that are done on the open source code?
and if they make any changes are they going to keep it open source - i assume they are obliged to.

it does however seem to vindicate gnucleus .. ppl can now say gnuclues is morpheos without the anyoying adverts -or visa versa, therefore i can see that gnuclues may posibly benefit from this.

i notice that they have not done anything regarding the issues that have been raised ie transfer list and re searching when all hosts are offline.

if gnuclues makes these improvements and morpheus doesnt keep up gnuclues will be way ahead.

ps. I just noticed that under the help about it says it includes gnucleus under the genral public license

Gnucleus is under GPL so Morpheus is too!

Morpheus have to release their source with "ALL IMPROVEMENTS" they do...

well thats cool

so realy it means that there will be 2 versions of gnucleus :-
with adverts or without - i know wich i will prefer

i gues also it means there will potentialy be more development effort going in to the project wich cant be bad as long as they dont diverge too far or cuase conflict somehow.

open-source?

very off-topic, i'm confuzed about this "open-source"-where can i learn more?
like, who(governement/agency/court/rambo) will enforce that they (morpheus) releases thier code?

Unregistered March 2nd, 2002 03:17 PM

swabby could take streamcast to court and sue their asses off. it's been done b4.
if you want more info check out www.sourceforge.net

Unethical

While it is open source code, Morpheus stealing the complete design and layout of Gnucleus is unethical IMHO.

Morgwen March 2nd, 2002 05:07 PM

@ bub2000

Maybe but legal!

Morgwen

Moak March 2nd, 2002 05:14 PM

It's not unethical in any way, thats what GPL supposed to be: Some can take the code and then he has to give back any improvements and fixes, great for Gnucleus also. It becomes illegal and unethical when they don't give back the source.

I just posted a new "Clean Morpheus", NO SPYWARE!! you can now get it at
http://www.gnucleus.net/

Look for the special "clean" version called "Gnucleus 1.6.1"
Pass the word to every Morpheus chatboard or IRC chat, let people know!

(the point is it's sort of a joke, but these idiots don't know Gnucleus exists, so let them think it's something new)

SRL March 2nd, 2002 06:42 PM

The unfunny bit is I'm already seeing the "Morpheus effect". I'm now getting almost zero search results.

Hmm...

I find many files... I would not say more than before - but sure not less...!

Using actually Limewire PRO!

Maybe it's what you're looking for. I think the less common a file, the harder it becomes to find when Gnutella grows. It's probably because the network fragments into smaller pools.

Still, I never have had much luck myself with LW though. Since Morph-leus doesn't do ultrapeers yet it might not affect LW too much anyway.

Found at a Slashdot article.

Give it some time. I noticed these geeks don't know what a non mp3 file is for, they are downloading anything that aint a mp3 like they never had any.
figure if some people share back those same files we will be ok.

WATCH OUT for morpheus programmers being forced by their boss to add protocol "improvements" without asking the community then screwing it all up.

Swabby, get on the phone with these guys and introduce them to the_gdf fast!

The least they could do is offer swabby a consulting position. *******s

SRL March 3rd, 2002 02:32 AM

Morpheus was never mp3 only. In fact, FastTrack always had more stuff than Gnutella seemed too. Of course, it's hard to say for certain since Gnutella searches don't see as big a horizon (one thing ultrapeers are to fix).

Open Source Morpeus is a good thing...

Everyone should be happy about the open-source Morpheus... Even when they do improve it, they have to keep it GPL'd, which means we can take the ad-ware out. Here's a challenge for all of you out there: Use the source against the ad-ware, and re-compile Morpheus Preview without it. Simple task really. Now go for it!

SRL March 10th, 2002 10:22 PM

Yeah, *very* simple - just download Gnucleus! ;-)

Unregistered March 11th, 2002 04:50 AM

Compile morpheus

preview edition...

Has anyone actually tried this yet? heh... I was missing some files.

Be nice if they included all the header and res files 8-)

colin_r March 11th, 2002 10:00 AM

me too, i found there were those files missing.
mind u i also find that chatbar.bmp is missing from the gnucleus download too
