Default morpheus sucks

hello
1. morpheus CONTAINS spyware
2. morpheus is a clone of gnucleus (which is acutally better), www.gnucleus.net
3. morpheus is not open source, which means they want to make money with it and so its understandable that it contains spyware and ads..

thanks

The Morpheus Preview Edition certainly is open source. By using the Gnucleus source, they are bound by the GNU Public License to make it open source. While the Morpheus code may not be available for download on their site (they're not obliged to post it for download), they must provide it to you if requested to do so. Besides, at one point, they actually DID post the code for download... I have a copy of it msyelf.

As for the inclusion of spyware, there's nothing saying that the program is no longer open source just because it includes spyware.

Default They may put spyware BUT

they should post the source code of everything, spyware included. Since they didn't, they violated the GPL.

Nope. My understanding of the GPL (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong) is that nobody is required to release the source for anything that isn't statically linked into the program. The spyware, being a seperate DLL, isn't statically linked to the Morpheus client. So Morpheus is still in compliance with the GPL even by not releasing the code for the spyware.

well,

when i posted this, i havent read much trough this forum.
i think morpheus with its recent client is ok.
its friendly to all other clients and everybody is free to choose gnucleus, which has no spyware and no ads.
by the way, now there are really more files available with all the morpheus users.
i think bearshare and limewire are a bigger problem. this "blocking" from them causes a blocking on the openp2p side and nobody is happy.
so what are other possibilities?
1. everybody stops blocking, which would be great, but i personally think its too late
2. creating 2 subnets, which i think isnt very good for the end user, cause one big net offers more files.
3. create a new network which is only opensource, which would be cool, but if we are realistic has no real chance of becoming aa major file-sharing-platform for all the "normal" users who only care the amount of files.

so, for me, i'll watch this until a decission in there, and until then, i'll use gnucleus and qtella.
If this conflict isnt gonna work out i'll switch to audiogalaxy

this is sad, because gnutella is really great. now with its ultrapeers, which will come soon to all clients, it could be really powerful.
But i disagree using a client, which destroys the other ones.
there should be enough room for both, and i think bearshare is making enough money with the current amount of clients.
But there is nothing one can do.
the "normal" user, who uses gnutella and tries out all clients will realise that bearshare offers the most, even if its freeloading from the others.
so he uses bearshare.....many peaople will do this.
and then i think bearshare will leave gnutella and turn to another network, leaving gnutella back with a less size

but perhaps i'm wrong

thanks

Personally I think Bearshare couldn't seperate from the Gnutella network. Regardless of the number of users Bearshare has, I still don't think they have enough to make their own viable network. Likewise, I don't think that the Gnutella network would be a completely viable network without Bearshare users. So, at this moment, I think the Gnutella network and Bearshare both need each other.

well, i think youre 100% right when you say that gnutella and earshare need each other - in the moment.
but i COULD be, that the users switch over to bearshare because they get more files.
And then, why not leave the gnutella network?
i really dont think this will happen...but it could, and i thinh something like this has to be stopped.

by the way..i heard you're coding a client in VB.
is it possible for me to see the sourcecode cause i wanna learn something and the popular clients are all in c or too complicated for me :-)

thanks

It's true that it could happen. I just think it's highly improbable.

That's right.

Unfortunately, at the moment, other than my data conversion module, I only have bits and pieces completed. I've been jumping around a lot within the project lately... First working on the GUI one day, then working on the back end stuff (Gnutella protocol stuff, database stuff, etc.) another. Also a lot of what I've been doing in the past couple weeks has been experimentation with VB to make sure it can do what I want it to do (I haven't used some of this stuff within VB before... like the Winsock control for instance). But, it's coming together somewhat quickly though, and I'll let you know when I have something substantial to show you.
