Slow Uploaders
 

Any change making some sort of a limiter that blocks out slow uploader's ??? I have a Lan connection with 20+ free slots for uploading but every ****** time all of them are used by 33,6-56,6 modem users or people who have fast connetion but they download up to 30 files simultaneously... so if there would be an option to allow users only upload from you with (i.e >6-40Kbps/sec) that would be nice......
Ok I now that uploading speed could sometime drop below that 6Kbps/sec even with a 10mb/s connection but if the speed keeps below that limit for a long time --> user would be kicked away...
The other way for me is to remove all files from sharing folder but I dont wanna do that. Also I'm tired of kicking people manually off who download three 700mb avi files simultaneously with 0,4 kbps/sec.

There are several ways of limiting people - you can restrict people to one slot at a time:

Options|Uploads|slots

If you increase the maximum number of people who can download from you but limit your upstream bandwidth:

Options|Uploads|Basic

then you shouldn't need to kick anyone off - as many people will use your connection as is room for - with the first change, each person only gets one slot.

So who gives a shi7 if someone with a modem is downloading from you? It's not like they're using up all your bandwidth.

Well ok, 3 simultaneous 700 MB avis.. that has to go. But I'm sick of elitist crap about blocking all modem users from downloading anything. That is a feature I will never put in.

Thank you for saying, again, what always needs to be said. There is far too much nonsense which IS elitist nonsense about limiting modem users. They are still the majority in p2p. They are important. I think that all will find that most modem users are not modem users by choice. They should not be denied in any way.

Modem users, who are becoming more and more of a minority in the gnutella network, are not important for the network at all, but they aren't hurting it very much either, although most of them are freeloaders.

It's not easy to block them and certainly not worth the trouble.

You must wake up and realize that the great majority of people on this planet do NOT have access to any connections beyond a dial-up modem. Your comments are ill thought out and elitist.

OK, here's a study that's kind of old, and doesn't apply to just modem people, but I doubt things have changed much since. I'd love for someone to repeat this analysis today.

My experience on Napster, as of a year ago when their filters became very effective, is that the clear majority of people share either zero or less than 10 files, probably just what they've downloaded during their current session. Large numbers of other people who have files shared use a firewall to block uploaders. So, from what II've seen over the last 2 years of file sharing is that most people are freeloaders.

I admit I shared nothing when I was on 28.8 dialup because it takes 20 minutes or more to download a file even with nothing else using my bandwidth. Waiting 30+ minutes for one file (that often got cut off) while other people are using my bandwidth for uploading is unacceptable to me.

The people who bug me are the ones with broadband who download many of my files and consistently have nothing shared. I cut those leeches off in a hurry. This is P2P not a client-server network, at least for broadband users.

xDSL user are elitist ???? my a**. Dont know where desert you live but here in the western world its 80% cheaper to use faster connetions (like DSL) than an old crappy modem.....
and I'm not talking about some university LANS/T3s which basically are free for students....
