Exclamation Ogg support

I would like to request support for Ogg Vorbis files in Limewire. It's great that Limewire is now Open Source and its a great app. I was rather surprised, given the importance of open protocols which Limewire describes on its website, and the opensource/cross-platform nature of the code, that Ogg was not even supported in the "audio file" search. A built in player would be nice, too, but I would at least have expected an audio file search for 'Britney Spears' to have turned up at least one ogg.

Unencumbered audio formats are as important as unencumbered p2p protocols IMO.

Ogg doesn't stand a chance if the servents don't support it. All my (400+) shared audio files are ogg. My servent is quiet most of the time. Put in a few mp3's and the clients show up like a school of piranha!

In addition, ogg support could help network performance, at least to some degree, since ogg's tend to be higher in quality for the same bitrate then mp3s.

Post get the word out

the beauty of limewire is that it supports anything you tell it to ... tools > options > sharing ... at the bottom is a place to enter extions.... I've just entered ogg to see what that is all about .... look foreword to downloading a few from ya.

but what do you play an ogg file in?

Thanks for the reply. However, it's not the sharing, but the *searching* that concerns me. You can share any kind of file you want. But when searching for "audio" files, ogg results are not returned. If you search for "Any Type", oggs are, of course included. Its certainly understandable that the Limewire developers started with the most popular format, encumbered by patents as it may be. However, support for a truly open format (ogg) seems like a next logical step.

Sorry. I forgot to answer your question. Under a Unix or Unix like OS, xmms is good. ogg123 is a good command line player. Under Windows, the latest version of Winamp handles ogg. Under MacOS, I'm not sure.

Default .ogg Vorbis Players and Rippers

You can use your Windows Media Player for .ogg files-

Download - NimoCodecPack v5.0 build 7 - This will install many, many codecs for you to use with a large variety of media players. ( Be sure to say 'yes' to installing a short-cut in your Start Programs. )

You will find an excellent ripping tool in CDex v1.50 beta 4 or CDex v1.40.

FreeAmp v2.1.1 is available for Linux and Windows.
The only player that tries to come close to Winamp in sound.

( And don't forget Monkey's Audio .ape format - Very good. Latest is Monkey's Audio v3.96 )

I also think that .ogg should be included in the audio search because it needs a chance to grow and is also an open source project like Lime Wire, so it should really support it.

Default Audio select by file type

LimeWire will be displaying ogg files, when it encounters any.

For me the only ogg files Limewire has encountered were when searching for "Any Type" by filename,
NOT when searching for "Audio".

I suggest the audio search should include a select box for
file type mp3,ogg,whatever

LimeWire will display any ogg files it finds when performing a meta-search for "audio" files.
