Default Auto-repeat search

It seems that Limewire has the following behaviour:

If a download disconnected, then it seems as if Limewire keeps trying to requery the same host until its back up again.

However, if you repeat the search it can sometimes find the same file at another location. It then resumes the download from the new host. The same happens if you already have the search query and you click "Repeat Search".

What I would like is an auto-"repeat search" feature so that it does this automatically every xx minutes. That way if a host disconnects in the middle of the night, Limewire has a chance of grabbing a new one .....

----

P.S. Keep up the good work guys. Limewire development may seem like a thankless task with all the disrespectful posts on this forum but some of us appreciate your efforts.

Hi,

Your feature request is a sensible one.

You may be interested to know that a requery is a re-search, not a request to the same host that the file transfer be resumed.

The reason that requeries cannot be sent too frequently is because, since queries must be sent directly between computers, it is an enormous waste of bandwidth that can go to other purposes such as file transfers, other queries, query replies, and a variety of other useful devices. If instead this bandwith was used to requery the same search string frequently, it would slow down file transfer speed as well as diminishing the number of search results on the network.

The LimeWire development team is working on strategies to improve search results, and successful downloads.

It makes sense that one wouldn't want to "requery" too often.... I would say once per half hour or once per hour might be reasonable: you wouldn't punish the network but you would improve your chances of not wasting a night of downloading.

Ok ... actually I am still confused and while we're on this topic I would like to figure out exactly what Limewire is doing when its says various things. I can't find the exact details in the FAQs .... Correct me if I am wrong:

Search (and repeat search) obviously look for files satisfying the search terms. If these files have the same length (and similar but not identical names?) they are "grouped". Clicking download will choose 1(?) of these files. By the way, what does the color coding (red, green) mean exactly? Green is a fast connection? red is ... busy??

Once a file is in the download panel, Limewire attempts to download it (obviously). Usually, however the Connecting to xxx.yyy.zzz.zzz attempt fails, and I then see Requery sent .... So does this mean that Limewire is a) waiting to to attempt the download the same host xxx.yyy.zzz.zzz or b) is performing a new search across the Gnutella network for any host with a file matching exactly the requested filename? I had thought it was (a) but ajutagir's comments imply (b) ....

If you click Repeat search and a new host is found with a filename that matches the one that is stuck in the Requery ... loop, does that automatically break the loop and start downloading from the newly-found host? It seems so....

The connection speed, Modem, T1...etc is the speed reported by th other computer. If it is green, that means it is more likely to be a good connection than black or red.

LimeWire can verify that files are identical by checking there filename and size. As of version 2.5, LimeWire will also be able to
verify through hashes. Hashes are tags added to files that allow clients to identify identical files.

Requery sent means the LimeWire has searched the [Gnutella network] for an identical file. If such a file is found, the download will be resumed.

Thanks Joakim, I changed internet to Gnutellanet

Hello!

This thread sure is educating for none experts!.But the fact that LimeWire does not come with a good Read Me instruction document is one of the major complaints from magazines that have tested it and its grade have suffered because of it.
Hashes sure is a good thing that will improve the efficency of Requerys.

By The way I think that ajutagir meant that it will search the Gnet and not the Internet.

well is this still up-to-date or removed during the builds?
got 4.4.5 running here still and did a test: searched for a couple of very common terms, noted down the amounts of results after search was finished and looked in again after 3 hours.
not any search result changed.

so i must assume the 45 mins requery was removed for whatever reason

moreover for the wishlist: would be nice to have a /global/ search that can repeat searches for all my search tabs (usually 30 - 40 at a time)
currently i need to repeat every search manually...
pain in the neck but it's me who want the rarities not the rarities who want me ... so i will take this pain if there's no other way
(and maybe will never be)
