It would be nice to be able to return your search to the entry area just in case you typed in something worng or you just want to refine your search. This also is handy now that the autocomplete option sometimes autocompletes the wrong thing. I still like the autocomplete though. If you have complants about it just make an option to turn it off.

You cannot stop or refine a search once it has started. Just do another search.

it you had a scroll down from the search box, you could cancel a search, then hit the down arrow and pick your search words again and or modify them.

they should stay there even after closing, that way, you could search the next day of after a crash with out having to type in or remember the titles you were looking for.
