Hope I'm not out of bounds commenting here! The international version of LW uses a different type of installer (InstallAnywhere) to the english version (InstallShield) & is recommended to people having installation problems. Try uninstalling the earlier version of Java. If that means uninstalling both then do that & reinstall the latest version. The international installer is a packaged version & java comes out with new updates fairly often. So I guess it's a question of whether the focus should be taken off the development of LW to update the international package with not totally tested versions of Java. It doesn't quite add up. Problems with new versions of java may not totally surface for some time after. And from what I've read, even now there's some issues with java; java's an imperfect softw that's trying to overcome probs it's long had. Java comment & also this one Updating Java for International installer. |

Hi ukbobby, The quote you copied is from a period of time where neither installer was looking for the right versions. We fixed the one that we could. The International installer cannot be fixed easily (because the 1.4.2 or 1.5 JRE is so much larger than 1.3, we haven't chosen to ship with it yet). I would hope that the international version is not being recommended over the English version, because the two are 100% exactly the same. The only difference is that the international one will force you to use Java 1.3, whereas the English one will let you use whatever JRE is on your system. There is no urgent attention required because both the English & International installers install the exact same program. If you want to use the newer version of Java, just use the English installer. |

Getting LW Pro International to use Java V1.4 onwards Dear Sberlin Once again, thank you for your enlightening reply, at this moment I will stick with the International version of LW Pro because, on my system, it is stable and works. However, my originally suggestion still seems valid, adding a manual selection feature, within “Options”, so a user can choose which version of Java they want use, the shipped version (V1.3) or the one installed on their PC. This would cover the point made by Lord of the Rings, i.e. if the latest version of Java proves to be unstable then users could revert to back to the default (V1.3) version. Also, this would deal with your concern about V1.4x onwards being too large to ship with LW Pro. I am aware that when writing or maintaining a programme, such as LW Pro, for users across the globe you have to strike a balance between automatic and manual features. Nevertheless, I believe, my suggestion could add additional functionality and flexibility without upsetting the balance you have so far achieved. UK Bob |
