mouse scroller wheel

How bout making it possible to scroll with a mouse scroll wheel instead of having to use the bar sliders??

Just a little thing but i think it would be nice.

Thanks.

yep that would be good and shouldn't be too complicated

i think that's prolly because its using java instead of c so it doesnt get 'automatically' configured to scroll using the mouse wheel... i dunno... any ideas?

et voilà October 3rd, 2004 09:17 AM

Salut, if you use java 1.3, no scroll wheel for you. However Java 1.4 and 1.5 are supporting it. If you want LW to have scroll wheel support dl java 1.5 at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp Download the JRE not the SDK. Uninstall your current java then install 1.5. Start LW and voilà!!! Scroll support.

Bonne chance

JAVA and Scroll Question?

I have Java 1.3 installed now, do I have to uninstall it before I install the latest Java?

Bosnianheat26 October 11th, 2004 06:16 PM

No, just go ahead and install the next version.

Java 1.5 But LW Pro still using 1.3

Dear LW People

I have just downloaded and installed Java 1.5 and, like V1.4.x before it, my LW Pro V4.0.8 seems to completely ignore the latest Java applet and continues to use V1.3, the Java applet it came with.

And before anyone suggests it, I did close down LW Pro before installing Java 1.5 and I rebooted my PC afterwards. I then checked the installation, within Control Panel, to ensure V1.5 was properly installed and working. Only then did I restart LW Pro and check to see that it picked up the new installation, as you can see from the attached screen print it has not.

Also, I do not have Java V1.3 installed on my PC, not directly anyway, that came with the default installation of LW Pro.

My request is this; there should be a manual facility, within “Options”, to direct LW to latest Java installation. For example, my installation of Java is on C:\Program Files\Java\Java\jre1.5.0 but I do not have any way of telling this to LW Pro or asking it to do a new search.

Unless I have missed something, all that I can say is that automatic find functions are good if they work as intended or have some sort of manual override function to be employed if they do not.

Therefore, lets have a manual Java configuration facility so that users can point LW Pro to the folder/directory where the latest Java applet is installed.

I have read that different versions of Java can be installed in 1 OS.
Perhaps you could check under software on your config screen and see it there's more than one and eventually uninstall the old version ?

Use the "English" LimeWire instead of the international one. In order to ensure that the JRE supports international characters, the international installer installs its own JRE (1.3). The English one will use whatever is on the system.

LimeWire International cannot use latest Java applet

Dear sberlin

Thanks for your reply but it has delivered somewhat of a shock to my system, back in May when you helped me with my “Tools>Options & Buttons” problem I then asked about getting LimeWire Pro to use the latest installation of Java on my system, this was your reply:

Quote:

The problem may be in our executable, in that it doesn't recognize the newer Java versions. If that's the case, it's not something you can fix, it's something we have to fix. Rest assured that we'll look into it.

What I find so shocking is that the International version of LimeWire Pro has been recommended in this forum, over the English version, time and time again. However, you are now saying that if I want to use the latest Java applet, with the extra facilities that it brings, I will have to install the English version because the International version will only ever use Java V1.3, the applet that is part of it’s installation.

Sberlin, in all honesty, don’t you think this bug, i.e. the International version not being able to use any other Java applet other than the one it came with, as something that urgently requires attention?

Hope I'm not out of bounds commenting here!
The international version of LW uses a different type of installer (InstallAnywhere) to the english version (InstallShield) & is recommended to people having installation problems. Try uninstalling the earlier version of Java. If that means uninstalling both then do that & reinstall the latest version.
The international installer is a packaged version & java comes out with new updates fairly often. So I guess it's a question of whether the focus should be taken off the development of LW to update the international package with not totally tested versions of Java. It doesn't quite add up. Problems with new versions of java may not totally surface for some time after. And from what I've read, even now there's some issues with java; java's an imperfect softw that's trying to overcome probs it's long had. Java comment & also this one Updating Java for International installer.

Hi ukbobby,

The quote you copied is from a period of time where neither installer was looking for the right versions. We fixed the one that we could. The International installer cannot be fixed easily (because the 1.4.2 or 1.5 JRE is so much larger than 1.3, we haven't chosen to ship with it yet).

I would hope that the international version is not being recommended over the English version, because the two are 100% exactly the same. The only difference is that the international one will force you to use Java 1.3, whereas the English one will let you use whatever JRE is on your system.

There is no urgent attention required because both the English & International installers install the exact same program. If you want to use the newer version of Java, just use the English installer.

Getting LW Pro International to use Java V1.4 onwards

Dear Sberlin

Once again, thank you for your enlightening reply, at this moment I will stick with the International version of LW Pro because, on my system, it is stable and works.

However, my originally suggestion still seems valid, adding a manual selection feature, within “Options”, so a user can choose which version of Java they want use, the shipped version (V1.3) or the one installed on their PC.

This would cover the point made by Lord of the Rings, i.e. if the latest version of Java proves to be unstable then users could revert to back to the default (V1.3) version. Also, this would deal with your concern about V1.4x onwards being too large to ship with LW Pro.

I am aware that when writing or maintaining a programme, such as LW Pro, for users across the globe you have to strike a balance between automatic and manual features. Nevertheless, I believe, my suggestion could add additional functionality and flexibility without upsetting the balance you have so far achieved.
