New Feature Requests Your idea for a cool new feature. Or, a LimeWire annoyance that has to get changed. |

This issue has come up from time to time. You can apply Preferencing. ie: Tools>Options>Advanced>Preferencing & set the minimum no. of files these people must share for them to upld from you. I don't think the browse is a good way to determine whether they're sharing or not! To help to browse somebody they need to have Chat enabled & even then there's no guarantee you can browse them. There's many factors at play here. The LimeWire 4.1.x (666) build does have the possibility of filtering out certain clients. As I found out here But that's a variation on the official LW release. |

There is no way that you can determine if the so-called 'leeches' are doing anything 'bad'... You cannot know whether or not you are connected to a new user or an old user with a new machine or a 'nice' user who knows that they are going to switch off soon so they disable Uploads temporarily... The comments re: 'leeches' are almost entirely based on emotions and should not be a part of the p2p community... Limiting connections with others based on the number and/or overall volume of files shared is stupid... Sharing too many files at one time slows things down for you enormously... Allowing others to 'browse' your files can be catastrophic for 56K modem users (In fact they should never allow 'browsing' if they want to preserve at least some of their connection for actual file transfers). There are many other points that can and should be made about this nonsense over so-called 'leeches'. Relax... It's a hobby !

sharing Thanks, Lord of the Rings and ursula, for responding to this thread. Yes I know it's a hobby and that the sharing issue needs to be looked at from various perspectives (56k modem v ADSL, new user v seasoned user, fast p.c. v slow p.c., audiophile v casual downloader). I also appreciate that it can be difficult to draw accurate conclusions as to a third party's contribution to the network by whether or not the person has 'Chat' enabled or not. But I don't think I am taking this too seriously. I've dedicated up to 30 Gigs of my p.c. to music- music to share. The more people who do that, the better for the network. I've got that of my chest now, so I can return to what this is all about... SHARING! |

Hey, dogbreath !!! <sniff> <sniff> I am not in any major disagreement with you. Honest ! While I am quite convinced that the following does not apply to you, it must be acknowledged that there are many, many people participating within the Gnutella Network who not only do not actually understand HOW Gnutella Network works, but WHAT Gnutella Network actually is !!! The answer for you others is simple - - Gnutella Network is US ! NO Central Server. Just all of us. The 'leecher' stats are dropping very very fast in Gnutella Network... Amazing really ! My 'case' is a great example of why it is not possible to judge any 'leech factor' regarding any one user of/on the network... My base sharing files are eBooks... Yup. Now have a total of @ 7.2 GB of eBooks for sharing... All vetted and clean files. (This is no big deal... There's a guy in South America with 8.6GB and he is sharing all of them at the same time !!!) Now, it takes a wee longer to develop an eBook shared library of these sizes than it does to bung 14 .avi files and the 'usual suspects' of music files... What's the above all about ? Right now I am sharing exactly 469MB of eBook files... Makes me look cheap if not some crazy definition of 'leech' ! But, I rotate my shared files so that the total sources out there will grow more rapidly... There's lots of ways to move a lot of files into the network in relatively short times... But, as with many other things, you need to 'drive' a p2p client with a fair bit of attention if you are going to get the max benefit from it... The clients may present themselves as being 'fully automatic' or whatever... They are not if you truly want high-performance sharing... BOTH ways ! Anyway... I am sure that this is not the last we will be hearing from you here in GF... Hope not... hasta luego |

You can determine who has Chat enabled. Those that have a golden smiling sun icon in the chat column are those that have chat enabled. In the present versions of LW, to make this column active: on Mac you Control click onto the top of the column bar & more options will show to you. I'm not sure what this is on windows. My guess is right-click whilst clicking onto the 'top' of the column bar. The show chat column can also be added to your upload pane of the Monitor window.
