My Brother (living far away) and I have been trying to figure out a way to connect our computers to share a few files between us over the Internet. We both have Limewire.
Some programs have come up in the discussion, such as FTP, Grouper, PCanywhere, MSN/Yahoo/AIM Messengers, and Gnutella (Limewire), but if someone has a better option that is secure, and does not require a major server installed... I'd like to hear it.
Therefore, my new feature request for Limewire is to improve the Direct Connect option to allow two users to access a specific designated directory (separate from the general public) for personal sharing (family Christmas, birthday photos, Family vacation video footage in the WTC, etc). It would be a plus to for both 'trusted' users to upload and download without problems presented by firewall or other limitations.
I'm not sure how to accomplish this in Limewire. Some concerns would be 1) Firewalls may still cause problems unless Limewire interacted well with them to overcome problems when connecting Directly to a trusted host (perhaps a different port is needed). 2) The Screens of Limewire do not currently support a separate private directory/screen for two users to upload/download to each other's private configured directory -- this is because its not designed for private sharing.... only public sharing. And such a feature, while useful to many, may not encompas Limewire's designer's own goals for the program. However with this feature, it does further enhance users' ability to share when/where/as they want, and it does further legitimize the use of Limewire as a legal and reputable software to those who complain its only for piracy of copywrited files.
Other suggestions or comments on this to improve the new feature request or help it get accomplished, are welcomed. Thanks.
