![]() There is a website I visit to tell me my IP. Everytime I run Limewire, I first find out my IP, then I enter it into the Advanced Options Firewall page. Why doesn't LimeWire just do it for me? Duh, how easy can this be? Assuming the operator of this website doesn't change their site any, all you have to do is have LimeWire visit this http://www.whatismyip.com/ website. Now, look for the following HTML tag: (TITLE)Your ip is xx.x.xx.xxx WhatIsMyIP.com(/TITLE) (I had to change the pointy brackets to round brackets, but you get the idea.) Now, merely insert this into the IP adress of the options page. Okay, now allow me to turn this feature on and off, and you're set. Other sites do similar things, but this one is pretty simple and slick. The LimeWire company could do the same thing (it's just a cgi script, oif course) so that the format will never change. But come on, this is easy!! |

![]() Very good. I have a DSL with private IPs static and public IP assigned dynamically. I have used similar method for ages. I'm replying, because your link does not give correct information. For me, it reports a completely wrong host. (probably a proxy or something similar) I use: http://grc.com/default.htm and click shieldsup/test my shields. This gives me my correct public IP everytime. I suggest people first TEST what gives correct information before blindly accepting information and inputting it to LimeWire. B Rgds, Maccara |

![]() Actually, if you are using a hardware firewall, router, IP sharing device, etc winipcfg will not report the proper IP address. Winipcfg will report the ip address assigned by the hardware device. Therefore, going to www.grc.com is a better approach. |

![]() Well, not necessarily. That depends on the ISP. For example, one of the major ISPs (telephone company) in my country use the following approachs for DSL connections: Customers are assigned 5 private IPs each starting 10.... which are static numbers for as long as you will be a customer and allow access to telephone company's private network. Then the customer connects to "dial" proxy where you actually choose the ISP connection for which you have signed on to access the internet. Upon that time your connection will be routed through NAT proxy and the only way to get your dynamic public IP is to connect somewhere and check where you're connecting from. For that purpose www.grc.com is probably the easiest for average user. Your NIC will always be configured on the static IPs assigned to you and since you do not have access to the ISP's routers etc there is no way of knowing your IP unless you use some external method to acquire it.
