Also new to the forums and trying to look in different topics to find answers. I downloaded Phex and it seems very clear and easy to use, but since I am not interested in games or music, am wondering how to tell if an application is for real or not. I need these programs for work reasons and not employed, so was wondering if Phex is the right program. Seems many of these forums and programs are devoted to people who are game/music oriented. I downloaded what was supposed to be *** from Limewire, for example, and after it took 8 hours, there seemed to be no actual application, even though the file folder said it was over 500MB. I know there are also codes to change or alter, but I am not that sophisticated to even know how to access them. Anyway, any advice gladly and humbly accepted.

Whatever you download, check it with a virus scanner. Bitzi might also help you to check if something is real: http://bitzi.com

Please also keep in mind that YOU are responsible for what you download and share. In most countries it definitely isn't legal to download commercial applications via Phex, so you shouldn't do it.

Did you already look at free progams like Gimp which you can legally use?

arne_bab,
Thanks very much for the advice. There is a lot to learn, and every effort to spread your knowledge is greatly appreciated. I have never heard of GIMP, and that will be another place I will go immediately following this note to you. I have been out of work for nearly a year, and this is really a desperation move, since everything I am applying for requires knowledge of the applications needed. In twenty years, I have always bought everything at full retail. Thank you again, I will keep learning more.

Gimp isn't as newbie friendly as Photoshop, but it gives great flexibility and isn't far from Photoshop feature wise.

As free alternative for any vector based drawing tool you can use inkscape (Inkscape. Draw Freely.) - I use it with a wacom tablett and it works great! (but I'm just a hobbyist)
