help on file format

can anyone please tell me what a .dmg file type is for a mac. I Thought it was disk image but am having problems opening the document.

I would take a look at it with an ASCII text editor and see if there are any clues. It may be some proprietary format for some program.

It is indeed a disk image. Mac OS X's `Disk Copy' utility should be able to open it: double-click the file, or start the app and drag the file onto it.
