low number of files
 

Hi Ya'll

I was hoping that someone might be able to explain the sudden drop
in files available to share, from 600+ to only 299 this week at most.
I am running limewire basic in Mac 9.2.


Also, being a neophyte, can someone explain the ratios of dropped messages in the connections window. What is a good ratio and what is
a bad ratio? Should I drop bad ratio connections as advised by the Limewire
instructions?

The number of files available varies widely depending on the general health of the network, and how many hosts you are connected to. It will go up and down during the day. I've noticed the longer I leave Limewire running, the more hosts/files become available. The network seems to become smaller on weekends--due to fewer machines staying in the network or so I've read. I usually will perform the same search several times to get the best variety of potential files for download.

As for my connections, they say that any host that has a large percentage of dropped messages should be removed. I usuallly check my connections and remove ones that are 75-100% dropped messages on a consistent basis. I always remove a Gnuecleus host--it drags down the system and does nothing for me.

There's no reason to close connections for dropped messages, LW does this for you if necessary. Some messages are dropped because there's no need to route them anyway (Ultrapeer protocol, caching...).
As for Gnucleus Ultrapeers, again there's no reason to drop them. Even they report few connected hosts, this is because they don't send all the information to your peer, so you won't see many host; but they will give you as many search results as any other Ultrapeer with less bandwith.
