always a mysterious 28KB file as search result???
 

is this just happening to me? and: what is it?

when i launch a search (no matter for what type of file), almost always i'll pretty soon receive, among the results, one which matches the wording of my search term exactly, has more or less the right extension (for example for video it comes in as .mpg, but never as .avi) and is 28KB big.

usually that's too small to qualify for what i'm looking for.

any ideas who's sending this thing? is it some kind of decoy (so that if i download it the other end somehow identifies me)? is it just a system bug?

i'm using limewire 2.2.4 on a mac (os 9.1).

i'd love to know...

It is most likely a porn spammer who is running a customized gnutella client that makes phony results for whatever you search for. You can filter them out if you add their IP address (Location column in the search results) to the block list in the preferences. Go to Tools/Options/Filters/Hosts and add them to the list.

I've already filtered out quite a few of these IPs but a fair number of Einstein-like luminaries have decided to give these guys more publicity by dowloading the spam files and sharing them :rolleyes:

Thank you all for this thread. I typed in some names and got those 28k files. Opening them in different programs soon uncovers porn address. I was really confused at first because I was doing a search for a person and thought I stumbled onto a secret I didn't want to know about!
