Thanks for the clarification trap.

At my web site under GCCC (Gnutella Content Community Creation) - I discuss the various aspects of sharing and the need for content communities.

http://www.leeware.com

I'll explain why using the freeloader file setting does not help the situation:

Lets say that there are X users sharing good content and X users want to encourage sharing so they set the freeloader limits 500 files before some (Y) can connect to download content.

Forgoing all of the issues with this... let's turn our attention to Y who want access to the content being hosted by X. Y doesn't have any ("good content" to offer in order to meet the sharing requirements.) So what does Y do?

Answer: If Y is a x86 user Y simply shares his %systemroot% folder (which contains exes and dlls and other files necessary to run his box.) There can be more than a 1,000 files in these directories many of which most people will never download. Assuming they are viruses or don't need them on a fully functional system.)

So, Y now has access to Xs content without adding any value to the content on the Gnutella network (Sharing has been encouraged but the desired results of encouraging people to share content of value has not.)

Free riding continues and no value has been added to the content on the network.
Lee I realize this was just a scenerio, but why would any one set a 500 file limit on file sharing? If a person is just starting out and attemptin to build a library to share, he (she) is going to have to start somewhere. Shutting him out of the worlds largest sharing network seems, well, hoity toity, to me.

Dennis you are absolutely right! Although I don't practice this, I assume that the people who do--do this to keep freeloaders out of their systems. Another possible reason is to keep trolls out i.e. companies looking for illegally shared content and I'm sure there are many non-clandestine reasons for setting high byte counts (other p2p system) and shared file counts (LimeWire.)

Perhaps you're correct. I actually set my "freeloader" limit to 50. I do not want to shut out those who would like a few songs and I assume that in this day and time, most people can come up with at least 50 songs on their own with out the help of file sharing networks.

Heck young folks today can probably just rip all their CDs and have several hundred songs. However, for the benefit of those less fortunate I try to give them a chance.

What I know: I see the same files *trying* to be downloaded day after day from me and the % sits at 0 while others are able to zoom in and out and receive what they wanted.

So, for myself, I believe my freeloader settings are working.

I'm not so sure about that. I don't know that much about it, but from personal experience I have a whole list of files to download that are always at 0%, and I'm sharing over a thousand mp3s. I hope no one classifies THAT as freeloading!

Does that make ME a freeloader? My measley 34 shared files take up 3.1gb on a system that has less than 17 to work with. Not a single one of them is an .mp3, either. I've also added ORIGINAL content, both from myself, and stuff found elsewhere. And yet, YOU consider me a FREELOADER? ..!.. ..!..

Thumbs up

piagi9 you're definitely NOT a freeloader IMO! My freeloader limit is set to 20.

Thanks for sharing

Yes, I'm sure he does. He probably browsed your shared files and decided that he should classify you personally as a freeloader.

My limit is also at 50, simply to make sure you are classified as a freeloader.

Seriously though, that's unfortunate. I wish you could check and see if people downloading from you were sharing. Most of the time I am unable to browse even when it says I can. WIth all the different clients out there it just doesn't seem like you'll ever be able to check for everyone. That leaves us with the flawed min files shared to not be considered a leech thing. Luckily for you, not everyone sets it at 50.

It just pissed me off, is all. So I'm not in to music and dirty pics. Sue me. My files average 200+Mg, and some of them I don't even WANT anymore, they're just there 'cuz people are still accessing them. That's what sharing is about.
And I had been fighting for days to clear up enuff space (failed)for a .vob file (need my practice) when I read that, so I just kinda blew.
Feel bad about it now. Sorry. Don't need bad feelings on this forum. Or anywhere, for that matter.

P.S. I cheated. Added a bunch of pics and mp3's to get in most peoples limits. Just hate to see the bandwidth wasted on people downloading them is all. Still, it's their life...
