not at all.

YOU can address it by setting your preferences in your advanced settings to allow access or not to your files by "freeloaders" and how many files one must have before you consider the person to NOT be a freeloader.

Connection preferncing does NOT have any effect at all if you aren't an ultrapeer.

Interesting..... I wasn't aware of that! I have abundant resources, and still do not connect as ultrapeer very often... so most times, connection prefs are usless?

Connection preferencing works like this: If you receive a Pong (a message containing the number of shared files and their size) with hops <= 1 from an incoming connection (only ultrapeers get incoming connections) and the number of files is smaller than the amount of files specified in the settings, the connection will be dropped with a probability that can also be specified in the settings.

I'll explain why using the freeloader file setting does not help the situation:

Lets say that there are X users sharing good content and X users want to encourage sharing so they set the freeloader limits 500 files before some (Y) can connect to download content.

Forgoing all of the issues with this... let's turn our attention to Y who want access to the content being hosted by X. Y doesn't have any ("good content" to offer in order to meet the sharing requirements.) So what does Y do?

Answer: If Y is a x86 user Y simply shares his %systemroot% folder (which contains exes and dlls and other files necessary to run his box.) There can be more than a 1,000 files in these directories many of which most people will never download. Assuming they are viruses or don't need them on a fully functional system.)


So, Y now has access to Xs content without adding any value to the content on the Gnutella network (Sharing has been encouraged but the desired results of encouraging people to share content of value has not.)

Free riding continues and no value has been added to the content on the network.

I won't get into all the X's and Y's. I will put it simple terms and I hope it makes sense and contributes to this string.

What I know: I see the same files *trying* to be downloaded day after day from me and the % sits at 0 while others are able to zoom in and out and receive what they wanted.

So, for myself, I believe my freeloader settings are working.

Now does someone have an answer for my "Can't Move To Library" question, pretty please ... *smile*

If Y is an x86 user Y does not necessary have any dlls or exes. (Sharing ones root directory or the c:\windows directory is generally not a very good idea on windows, it's like sharing your /etc/passwd file on unix-like systems...).

However sharing useless data is possible - although we can safely assume that the average user won't do that.
