Default legality of sharing?

This may be redundant, but I just want to clarify something-
So, I can't get caught, or anything really in any way for sharing files? What about sharing files from other programs (i.e. songs I downloaded from Kazaa)?
I guess I just don't understand what all the lawsuits are about if its still okay to download and share files.
Thanks!

Yes it is possible to get caught. Although the odds of you getting caught are very very very low. I don't even worry about it. Some always will though....

from what i understand technically this is still illegal, but the authorities have realized the cat is out of the bag and if one is doing for personal use they are giving them slack. also, how can it be proved who was at the computer and downloaded anything?

short of talking to a lawyer in your area, http://www.eff.com/ is an excellent source of reliable information for US law ( especially http://www.eff.com/IP/P2P/howto-notgetsued.php ).
