Default Semi Private Limewire Network?

Hello everyone,

I would like to use Limewire Pro in a semi-private network, so that my colleagues and I can share files quickly over the Internet? Although we all run the program (version 4.0.5), when I search for files that I know are available (shared) by them I can't find them since my copy of the program is trying the entire public network instead of starting with the group of users that I want (my colleagues at work). I know their IP addresses, so adding them to the program's search list wouldn't be a problem -- we simply want to be the first on each other's search list (top priority when searching) so that we can share files with one another over the public Internet. If we could set up a completely private network (where only we can search and upload/download as a group, but others on the Internet can't) that would be even better. But if not we'd be happy to just have a semi-private group were we are able to quickly search one another's system before trying the normal search route.

Is it possible to configure Limewire so that it searches a specific collection of IP addresses (who also run it) on the public Internet before it tries the usual search route?

With thanks for your help,
Aaron

Unfortunately that is not possible at the moment. LimeWire doesn't really support private networks out-of-the-box, you would have to edit the source code for that purpose.

Default Try just skipping Limewire

Instead of going through limewire...this entire thing assumes you are all on the same router and have admin rights:

have them share the folder you want files from
go to Network Neighborhood or My Network Places
find their folder and just copy/past their files into your shared folder...done! (plus if your network is configured with nice cableing and equipment you can reach transfer speeds up to 100 megs a second!

also works for them, just reverse the role.

Default No Leaf (only UltraPeer) in Limewire Pro 4.0.5

Since I need to connect to users across the Interent (no lan here!) I'm trying the approach of adding leaf nodes as described by Fungi14 (thanks!). I follow these steps, but only have the ability to add an UltraPeer -- no option to add a Leaf. Will that still work? Although I can see both peers and leafs listed under connections, but can only add UltraPeer, so I wonder if adding the IP address of all of my colleagues using the add UltraPeer will work?

The next version of LimeWire will contain a host of features that will make it easier to tell friends about your files, and easier for them to retrieve them.

Default Don't pull a Bearshare

Hey guys, I LOVE new features. I don't like it when my options and configurations are taken away because the developers are afraid people don't know how to configure them properly.

As long as Limewire doesn't take away configurability and options I will like it...add all the features you want (event take them away)...but be extremely careful which features you remove and which you "safety proof" because many people don't like to be babied...noone likes to use software that cannot be taimed.

DO NOT DO WHAT BEARSHARE DID, I stress this the most. They took away user options and left only a few options, and the onse they DID keep where only slightly configurable...and were often changed for the "good of the whole"

I like options, I like easy, I like simple, I DO NOT like baby options that cannot be changed for users who know what they are doing. If I can configure Limewire to run better I should be allowed to. I like how the options and configurations are set up currently.

I say it one more time, add features, add ease, add streamlime...but be very very careful what features you change and DO NOT baby proof your client...I refuse to use software that thinks it's smarter than me...which is why when windows messed with my internet I REFORMATED!

Default Limewire 4.0.7 private sharing

I am glad to hear that Limewire 4.0.7 will have private sharing; it's features such as this that I believe make the product appealing to business users, and worth paying for. There are so many free Gnutella clients out there that I'd guess (just a guess) that many people don't bother to pay for a commercial version (such as Pro) unless they have specific needs that go beyond the features provided by the free tools/products. In my case, for example, I would like a cost-effective p2p tool for sharing files with my co-workers across the Interent (outside of the office network and over the public Internet), which is why I bought Pro and am happy to hear that the next version will allow this. As for the balance between features and ease-of-use that Fungi mentions, I don't have any problems with having private file sharing settings available in the Advanced settings (or elsewhere); I'm just happy to have it!

Thanks again for a great product. I've been using Limewire off and on for years, and when I upgraded to Pro last week I was impressed with the new interface and additional features it offers. Looking forward to private file sharing in the next version.

Aaron
