Default Hi, please if you could help..

Hi guys, I kinda got to this thread while trying to find an answer to my downloading problems. Apparently, this dude has the same problems as me.

I used to download up to 90kbps, but usually bordered around 30-40kbps with 8 host(my max). For the past month or two, this speed has reduced dramatically, ranging from 0(most of the time), to 3 or 4kbps. As such, a download for a 5mb file which used to take me less than a minute, now takes me almost 40 mins.

There has been no changes to my ISP, nor my subscription plan, and I believe they're advertising surfing speeds of up to 12MBPS(http://www.starhub.com/online/maxonl...riceplan.html). If you do visit their site, i'm on the Premium plan).

"MaxOnline Premium at a monthly fee of $79.80 (w/GST) per month
Offering you download speeds of up to 12Mbps (12,000Kbps) and upload speeds of up to 384Kbps."

I really don't believe it to be a problem with my isp(unless of course they fiddled with the p2p speeds as mentioned earlier in this thread), neither have I made any drastic changes to my desktop setup(i'm on OSX btw).

Please, can someone help me???

Sounds like Starhub are throttling p2p (ISPs don't always tell their customers the truth).

Hi, Im kinda having problems with d/l speeds with Limewire and did a search on google and this thread came up so i read through most post and tried the suggestions but to no avail i noticed there wasnt much on people on a network but i am could this be why im getting low d/l speeds.

I did a speed test, and it showed i have a 4.72Mbps d/l and 386kbps upload speed and yet when i attempt to download something be it a song or video im getting 0-5kbps which cant be right can it?

Some stuff they may help about my pc
OS- Windows XP home edition
Firewall/Antivirus - Norton 2006
2gig RAM
136gig Free space
Im using the basic version, im not to great on all the technical aspects so if anyone is able to help but needs more info i will try to get it, all the tests in the thread have been ok like the port not being blocked or the firewall stopping the connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Default Benchmark

Thanks for the info.

One question, is there an optimal performance with regard to download speed. Some sort of benchmark, so I can tell if I am getting the best from LW and my cable connection? The reason I ask is if I keep changing settings they will get worse or better but how can I tell when I hit the jackpot? Also I run a small program from windows sidebar called network meter V2.1 which has a tiny display that sits on my desktop telling me my DL and UL speeds and it never goes above 250KB. When I start LW my download speed always starts at this speed then over a few hours will gradually reduce to less than half that.

Any input will be gratefully recieved.

Stew

Ok guys, I called Roadrunner and did the online test @ Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and my speeds were at:

Download- 8139 kb/s
Upload- 796 kb/s
Distance- 50 miles from server

So then i went to Bit and Byte Conversion and i came up with:

Dowload- 1017.375 KB/s
Upload- 99.5 KB/s

They I went back to Limewire and the highest setting is 43.31KB/s. So why won't it let me go any higher???

I'm sure I made a mistake somewhere. Can yall pleeeeeaseeee help me?

Thanks
Robert

If you do a speed test, I suspect you will find your speeds are around 25-30 KB/s upload and 200 KB/s download after line losses, etc. and after converting from k bits/s to KiloBytes/s. 10-25% line loss is typical.
Browsers in general do not need much bandwidth, so I'd suggest you could give 80+% of the tested speed results to upload & downloading in LW.

I personally find the more bandwidth I give upload, for some odd reason the faster my downloads go. But my upload speed is up around 90 KB/s (around 750 kbs). I give maximum upload, it does not seem to affect my browsing, however it might for some people on slower ISP bandwidth plans.

I found the explanation most helpful, and am grateful that someone took the time and effort to spell it out in great detail... but I'm just one person.

>>deckerd26354, your questions have nothing to do with what I posted about Optimising LW. Please post them in a different thread

'kay....Which forum would you recommend that I start a thread in, that's appropriate for my previous questions, and any other admin, tech-savvy-type questions I may have? By the way, I have purchased LimeWire Pro...

Thanx,

Deck
