Firstly, I would really like to commend you and thank you for being such an absolute darling!! You have been soooo helpful to countless computer illiterates and confused like me, and so incredibly patient with everyone who keeps asking repetitive questions (even tho the answers are there if people just take the time and patience to read through all the posts carefully). So i'd like to say a big THANK YOU!! So rare these days to find people with patience and generosity of spirit!!

I've managed to work out the maths a little, but still a little uncertain about other aspects, can I ask your advice on this?

My upload speed is 64KB, and download speed is 436KB, ADSL connection. Upload set at 100%, slots - 3 uploads per person, max 10 upload slots. Max download slots - originally set at 8, but i cut it down to 4.

I've tried to follow the last step f which you had recommended, but I'm afraid I do not really understand. Let's say, e.g. I am doing a simultaneous download of 3 files, 2 from Cable/DSL and 1 from T1, how do I know if the combined speed is near my max download bandwith? I presume the total no of files I d/l simultaneously will affect the speed, so I try not to d/l more than 3 or 4 files at the same time.

However, most of my download speeds are really slow - most of the time at 0KB/sec, takes about 1 - 3 hours on average to d/l one file. Is this normal? Is there anyway I can adjust my settings to optimise my speeds? Or could it be that I am located in Asia be one of the key factors for the turtle speed? (I'm assuming that most of the hosts/servers are located far far away in US )

One last question: under Connection, what do those figures under Bandwidth (I/O) and Dropped (I/O) mean to laymen like me?

hi... i'm new to Limewire, just bought it like 2 hrs back. I've been getting very slow download speed (15kB/sec although i have a 2MB ADSL connection) and then, while browsing through this forum, i came onto this post. I tried the stuff on the very first page of this post to try boost my download speed but it didn't quite work.

Anyways, i didn't really bother to read the following 8 pages of replies, so i just want to ask this question: does enabling uploads help me in getting a better download speed? This prolly might have been discussed over and over in other posts but i just want a quick reply so i won't have to go through all the forum. Any help on this will be most appreciated

I'm new to Limewire and have read this thread (and some others) – it's great and has already helped me. I think I've put in all the numbers correctly but there seems to be a problem somewhere.

When I try the Bug report it says “Received incoming this session: false“ but I can download and there are also uploads.

Downloads: 2–4 KB/s, sometimes 8–10 KB/s and I even noticed 40 KB/s for about two seconds, the numbers are jumping all over the place, going up and down all the time (usually staying below 5 KB/s)

Uploads: 8–12 KB/s

Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I used www.pitstop.com. According to that site my download speed is 1400 kb/s (175 KB/s), upload speed is 400 kb/s (50 KB/s).

What exactly is T1 and T3? I've never seen that anywhere and I haven't found an explanation.

aggiech, if you want generosity of spirit check LOTR's posts... He spends so much time helping people around here that I'm starting to think that he works for some kind of good-will organisation or something

Anyway, first what I say in step f) is to take a single file that would seem reeeeaaaal popular (dunno, some hip-hop song or something) and download that. If you did the bits-to-bytes conversion well enough, then that file (with enough sources) should be able to get you somewhere around that number. (actually, you may have to try with 2 simultaneous dlds, as your download bandwidth seems quite large).
Have you done a Bug Report test?
As for knowing if the combined speed is nearing your max bandwidth, AFAIK adding them up is fine. You have to know that the more files you dld, the less available bandwidth you will have, because aside from bandwidth used to actually dld the file, some is also used to send messages between the downloading user and the uploading user.

Ze_Saint, yes enabling uploads will get you better results. (besides, it's P-2-P and you should share, but oh well... I won't get into that right know. Just know that not uploading doesn't make you any less liable to get caught...)

Jeanny, a T1 and T3 are satellite connections with huuuuuge bandwidths. What you should also know though is that your regular Joe can't afford a T3, so those that have them are prolly people sharing from work or organisations who deliberately go with the tempting T3 and spread fake files and whatnot.
Do you have the OS X firewall enabled?

No, not anymore.

It doesn't matter, if I enable or disable the firewall, the upload (16 KB/s) is still faster than the download (3 KB/s) – numbers from just a minute ago. If I’m really lucky I have a download speed of 15 KB/s for a few seconds before it's back down to under 5 KB/s.

Does anybody have any ideas?

murasame, if I knew how to pronounce that I would name my second born child after you. It is amazing what you have done for us. I had pretty much given up until I stumbled upon your thread and READ ALL THE POSTS. Honestly, that is the only way to understand this fix. The folks looking for quick answers and fixes will not get it. So here is my set-up based on what I've taken from this thread...


Upload speed - 214 Kb equalling 26.75 KB
Download speed - 1903 Kb equalling 237.8 KB

I am on a Cable modem through Charter Communications

Max DLs set at 11
DL bandwidth set at Unlimited
UL bandwidth set at 21 KB
3 UL per person
Max UL slots set at 8
Configured my firewall to accept LW (getting "true" on bug report)

Having done this, I have seen my DLs go from 4 KB to 30-50 KB almost instantly.

Is this where I should be? Thank you so much for all of this. I'm sure it took quite a bit of your time.

first of all, thank you so much for helping so many people with this post. i too, am AMAZED at how patient you have been answering so many questions, many the same question over and over again. you are truly a zen master.

now...if you have any patience left, i humbly seek some some of your sage advice. i have been up all night intensely studying this entire thread, and i have taken all the steps herein, but i have not gotten any improvement. limewire was working wonderfully for several months (50-80kB/s dwnlds) until last month when my comp crashed, i bought this new compaq last week (256ddr ram, AMD3000, comcast cable connection), connection bandwidth test: avg dwnld 1729kb/s= 216kB/s, avg upld 47kb/s= 6kB/s. i have norton firewall turned OFF, I'm assuming the low upld rate is because of comcast (from what i read earlier) i guess.

i have downloaded a file that has hundreds of hosts. i usually get about 6 hosts for the file at about 3,4,or,5kB/s. i have tinkered with the # of simutaneous downlds (from 3-40), i've adjusted the dwnld meter all the way up and down the spectrum. with the uploads, i have never had anyone upload from me, but i have adjusted that every way i can also.

right now i have it set as follows
#of simu dwnlds = 20 dwnld bandwdth = unlimited
max uplds per person= 3 upld slots= 8 upld bandwth=10.94 lowest it will go

i notice in bug report it says received incoming this session: false (i don't know if this affects my downloads or not.....i'm not concerned with uploads at all right now, i only have 10 files....i just want to get downloads right)....

i wanted to copy my bug report and paste but it won't let me but it says connection speed= 350

is there anything that i can do.....certainly there is some way i can get better download speed than 4kB/s...limewire is the only reason i pay for cable intrnt connection
