Default membership?

Don't feel bad, I got taken too but fortunately realized my mistake about 2 hours after "joining". It was for $17.88. I don't know if I was really had, or just stupid, but all I got was a promise of 24/7 technical support, and this was NOT for LimeWire, btw, which is to date the best I've come upon so far. Anyway, one name it goes by is TV.org. Fortunately, I realized the error of my ways about 2 hours after enrolling and immediately cancelled payment.

Default Standing Orders & Direct Debits

Ruthie

As Phoenixxx Minder said, standing orders and/or direct debits can be cancelled but there is a subtle difference between the two. A standing order is your promise to pay a company a certain amount, usually every month, according to your instructions to your bank. A direct debit is a demand for payment placed on your bank account by a company you have given permission to by filling out the necessary forms.

That means a company with a direct debit can place a demand for payment on your account as and when they want to. Now, as most of us get monthly bank statements, this means that you will not know how many direct debit demands were placed on your bank account until you get your statement or until your bank informs you that you have overdrawn.

This happened to me some years ago when I was dealing with an insurance company, instead of taking a certain amount monthly by direct debit they decided to make three direct debit demands in one go. As you can imagine, this pushed me into the red, I got my money back and no longer deal with that company.

The point I am making is this, if you have filled out a direct debit form, on the scam site you joined, they could be milking your bank account right now because your bank will honour direct debit demands as long as you have money (including your overdraft limit) in your account.

Therefore, you should not wait contact your bank and cancel this transaction as soon as you can.

Hello!..Nice to meet you all!
I recently searched and found the "Top Site of the Week", sooo I registered and used my credit card(OPPS!)...Long story short? I also went to the wrong site..It's limewire without a capital "L". I can across this forum and this thread and well...I saw I'd been had.GRRRRRR
I had to cut up my card, and my bank is deciding whether to reimberse me for the $49 bucks I so dorkiedly charged. Which isn't what they said it would be! GRRRR
Now I am about to use the URL I saw posted here, for the "Real" website".... I feel nervous even using that now...
I want to report those "people"..who and how do I do that? or is it not nesscary?
I hope I learn how to use this type of Forum soon... smilies, enter links, etc, real soon...I can't right now..should I ask for advice on a different thread?
I look forward to enjoying my "membership",lol, here at Limewire. I am really new to making music, I have soooooo much to learn. I hope this pic shows...I need help...in many ways, hehe
Take care,
Wolfsister

Exclamation hmmmmm?

ok it's bad enough that everyone gets scammed, but what's up with all your banks and credit card companies not backing you? Sounds to me as well as cutting up your cards you need to switch banks. I'm in as much shock over all the scam sites getting away with this crap as well as the banks! Sounds like the banks are supporting the scam sites NOT their customers.

Angry Really p....d off!

I am so mad! When I got my credit card bill, it gave the name of the company as MP3Downloading.Com. As I hadn't a clue if this was legit or not I rang my Cr. Card company and explained. They were great. When I said it should read LimeWire.com they said it would be best to lock down the card completely and they'd contact the company to get them to explain what's going on. Look at all the trouble this has caused, having to get a new credit card and number. Thank God, nothing other than the 28E had been taken out.

I'm so cynical now that I don't trust any of the sites. The credit card company also said that LimeWire itself should be able to do something if they know that these scams are going on in their site. Is this a reasonable thing to assume?

Also, I'm now worried about this site itself. Is this a file sharing site and if so if I download Limewire does it mean that anybody and everybody can snoop about inside my computer. Sorry if I sound mad but I am, and when you're not an expert and you don't know much about computers, it makes you even more cautious. Can you put my mind at ease over the Limewire downloads or not? Thanks!

Default Taking it Slow

Fed up

At least you had enough sense to come here, realised that you went to a scam site by mistake and you are now trying to get your money back. Many newbies, like yourself, never get their money back because they either realise too late they have been scammed or never find out.

So now let’s move on and get down to the nitty gritty:

You said (1):

Well, this forum has always shouted loudly and clearly about scam sites, published lists of known sites and advised people what to do once they realise they've been scammed, to do more than that is unrealistic.

Simply put, LW cannot stop anyone from setting up a scam site and paying Google to ensure that their site’s name comes top of any search for P2P software. In addition, a scam site on the internet can be anywhere in the world. Therefore, it is not possible for LW to do more about such sites. After all, you cannot always protect people who, without doing any research, charge head first into disaster.

I don't really understand why you should be worried about the LW site, it's been around for years. Maybe I have misunderstood what you are trying to say.

No one can snoop around inside your PC, apart from computer companies, just because you are using LW but if, like me, you are security conscious then you should take certain precautions:

1) Anti-Virus software - Protection against Trojans, worms or viruses that may sneak onto your PC via an open port, dodgy download or by any other means.

2) Firewall – Protect your PC from a hack attacks, stealths your PC and protects it from unauthorised entry.

3) Anti-Spyware – Protects you from adware, spyware, keyloggers, etc. which you pick up during normal surfing.

4) PeerGuardian 2 – Prevents computer companies (both foreign and domestic), local authorities and any organisation with big computers from sneaking into your PC, via port 6346, while using LW.

5) Keep your O/S security updates current

There are other security software around, such as anti-browser hijack, but I think I have given you enough to think about.

By the way, the URL to use to download LW or LW Pro is:

http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

I hope I have put your mind at ease because, although you have been bitten once and as long as you remain cautious, there is no reason why you should not take part in and use the internet.

Unhappy con sites

Hi it would seem I also have done this and the name on my card is IP-Mp3downloading.Com this has cost me £32 GBP instead of the £9 as advertised. It is ok for the internet whiz who knows where to go and what is available but when you are just learning it becomes a little too easy to be conned. I agree I will be more cautious in future but do not be harsh on the newcomers just because you have the experience.

Default Being Sharp with Newbies

Samtaz14

I only become harsh with conned newbies when they come to this forum shouting the odds that LW ripped them off, it's someone else’s fault that they've been ripped off, sheer newbie arrogance or that the volunteers that help out around here owes them something.

However, if a newbie says “help, have I been conned?” or “Help, I’ve been conned, what do I do?” then they will get all the “help” I and the other volunteers here can give.
