Blue Screen problem please help Please help, I've installed the newest version of LimeWire but when ever I try and use it I get a blue screen reboot. Sometimes it happens after 10 minutes and sometimes less. I've read all the help pages on BSOD but the only info it gives me is to uninstall the program. Surely there must be a way to stop this happening whilst I'm using Limewire. If its any help the BSOD always says its a 0x000000D1. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers |
I've seen threads about this in the past. Do a search on the forum for 'Blue Screen' or 'Blue' : http://www.gnutellaforums.com/search.php |
did you dl service pack 2 for xp I was having the smae prob after I dl the SP2 for xp. What worked for me was just to go into add/remove programs in the control panel and then get rid of SP2. Since then I have had no problems. good luck, stanz |
Still Blue Screen Shut Down I have uninstalled LW (what a pain that was), updated Java, installed SP2 (did not have before), scanned computer, updated DirectX 9.0 SDK, re-installed LW 4.0 (the all new and improved haha). "I STILL GET THE STUPID BLUE SCREEN" after only 10 minutes of running program instead of 30 minutes like before. Now don't tell me to search for "blue screen", because I have and done everything you wonderfull people have said to do. WTF do I do now???????????? v/r Blakecakes |
It's not LW after all !!! I wanted to say I'm sorry if I affended anyone with my last reply, I did some asking around and research, come to find out it's not LW that's doing all the "blue screen" shut downs. I fact it's a driver problem and I'm still try to find out witch driver of mine is bad. I can't figure out what video driver/card I've gone using the computer, think I need to pull it out and see witch one I've got inorder to fix the problem. Again sorry LW for accusing you and keep up the outstanding work you all are going. TY |
alright, I'm having the same exact problem. here's what I've found out so far...I can open LW as long as it's setup to where it doesn't automatically connect to the internet when it's opened.....AS SOON as I hit "connect" to connect to the internet, the blue screen flashes and the computer restarts. I've read several forums that would indicate a problem with my graphics card driver. I have a mobility radeon 9200 graphics card and all the drivers are up to date. I downloaded DirectX9.0 and my comp is not even 5 months old. Does anybody know what is wrong or how to fix it????? Thanks- |
biker, I have an idea of what may be causing this. If you could please find where "LimeWire.exe" is installed (generally at C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire <version>), add a file called "launch.properties" (all lowercase, without the quotes), and in it, put: -Dorg.apache.commons.logging.Log=org.apache.commons .logging.impl.NoOpLog -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -Xmaxf0.25 -Xminf0.10 -Xms4m -Xss64k -jar LimeWire.jar exactly like that. Then try starting LimeWire again. This will disable directdraw, which _may_ fix the problem. Let us know how it goes. (If you end up not being able to use LimeWire at all, just delete that launch.properties file.) |
sberlin, thanks for the help but I'm forced to embarass myself now...how exactly do you create that file and put other files in it? I've never done that so you'll have to write out the steps. thanks- |
No need to be embarrased. I assumed you were somewhat technical from the fact that you were able to search through a bunch of forums, upgrade your video card drivers, and update DirectX. It is good to know you don't need to be a comp sci major to do these things anymore. :) To get to the place to create the file, double click on 'My Computer', then double click on your hard drive (it should have C: after it). Then double click on 'Program Files', then 'LimeWire', and finally on the most recent 'LimeWire <version>' folder. Once you're there, right-click, choose 'New', and then 'Text Document'. It should create a new file called "Next Text Document.txt". Once you've created that, double-click on it -- it should open in Notepad. In notepad, paste the contents of the earlier post (I'll put them at the end of this one also) and then save the file and close notepad. After it's saved, rename that file by right-clicking on it and choosing 'Rename'. Rename it to "launch.properties" (without the quotes). Then open LimeWire again and see if it works... The contents of the new file should be: -Dorg.apache.commons.logging.Log=org.apache.commons .logging.impl.NoOpLog -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -Xmaxf0.25 -Xminf0.10 -Xms4m -Xss64k -jar LimeWire.jar Thanks. |
1 Attachment(s) sberlin....sorry, but no avail...it does the same thing....another thing, when I restart the computer, I send the error report and Microsoft tells me the problem as being Error Message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (Q293078) ....i hope that helps some. I'll go ahead and attach the file I created so you can see if it's messed up. thanks again |
...it doesn't appear that attachment worked out...but I straight up copied what you typed and pasted it so I promise it's right :D |
Oops -- it seems to have created the file with a ".txt" extension. The name needs to be "launch.properties"... To rename it, go back to the place you created it, and then click 'Tools' and 'Folder Options' from the menu at the top. Then click the 'View' tab. There, uncheck the box infront of "Hide extensions for known file types". Then click 'Apply' and 'OK'. After that, right-click on the file again and rename it to "launch.properties" (it should be listed as "launch.properties.txt" before renaming). Then try LimeWire again. Sorry for the confusing directions! Thanks, |
sberlin, once again, my condolences, but it didn't work. I changed those settings just like you said and all went well and then I booted LW and then hit connect and I got the blue screen....I restarted and tried it again and got the same thing....any other ideas? I'm desparate here. LW worked just fine yesterday and I didn't change any settings to my knowledge and then today it just decided to show me the blue screen every time out of nowhere.....so I uninstalled it and re-installed it (even got a newer version) and it's still not working.....thanks for any help |
Oh, it was working fine yesterday? That's relatively good news. Are you positive nothing happened between the time it worked and the time it stopped working? Did Windows do any updates, or was any program installed or updated? I recommend running AdAware and removing anything it reports, as well as going to java.com and making sure Java is updated. Also, just to make sure LimeWire is reading that file, can you delete everything from in it (so it's an empty file, but it should still exist). Starting LimeWire should show, "LimeWire was unable to load. Please download and install LimeWire again." If that doesn't show (and LimeWire works), then it's not managing to read the file. I've put a copy of what the file should be on our server -- you can right-click on the link and choose 'Save Target As' and save it as 'launch.properties' in the directory that LimeWire.exe is in (same place as before). The file is at http://www.limewire.org/temporary_fo...nch.properties . Thanks. Hopefully we can figure out what's causing this and fix it. |
sberlin, ok, I deleted all the stuff inside that file and started limewire and that box came up that said limewire couldn't start...just like you said. As for changes in my compter, I can't recall all that I did between when it worked and when it didn't work. One thing I DO think I did was uninstall the primary and secondary IDE channel drivers because they were stuck on PIO mode only and I had to uninstall them to get them back to DMA mode...other than that, I don't think I did anything major if anything at all....what's next? thanks |
also....I have Norton and it's updated and it runs a full system scan every morning and this computer is virus free and I run ad-aware almost every day and I did run it earlier today when I was trying to get LW to work so the comp is relatively clean of that crap too...and how do you get updates for java??? I went to the website and I can't find where they have updates....I opened java on my comp and I can't find a link on that either. thanks |
Hmm -- well it's good to know that at least some things have changed. Sorry to go through such a long process to figure out what's wrong -- I know how frustrating it is to try things only to have to restart the computer after they don't work. I've gone through that uninstall-drivers-reinstall-for-DMA thing before, and it was no fun at all. For some reason, things went crazy (most notably, my SoundBlaster card, which forever skipped). What was the reason you wanted the controllers to be set up for DMA? As far as Java goes -- there should be a button on www.java.com that says, "Get It Now". You might want to try uninstalling Java (from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs) prior to going there also, just to make sure it gives you the most recent version. |
the reason I wanted DMA is because it was on there originally and when I was trying to get DVDXCOPY to work, one of their troubleshooting steps was to dick with those controller drivers and that stuck them in PIO mode only....and PIO mode is the slowest of the modes....after I changed those drivers and they were stuck on PIO mode.....I noticed a HUGE difference in the speed of my comp....it slowed down dramatically...and just today I figured out why and reinstalled those drivers. any other ideas for limewire? thanks |
