Unhappy downloaded AVI files won't play

Greetings all I hope you can help me. I just joined Limewire. I downloaded 3 movies to try it out, unfortunately they will not play. I used windows media player which had a message :Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file could not be found. I downloaded new codecs and updated program but still has same message. Preview will not work either. I tried downloading different players and they said file was the wrong format. I tried convertors but they will not work either. Does anyone have suggestions or know what program these files are being created with. Thanks for your help Bill

The only thing Bill & M$ are after is $ x $ as far as the skies can reach!

Try VLC a free player with in-built codecs which will play most things except the occasional wmv file. Its controls are not the best but at least it plays most things. Including the newest formats.

If you'd prefer to dwnld more codecs try these: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html

Default vlc player

Thanks for the info, tried the vlc media player as you suggested. About 1 out of 5 movies work. It seems that there is just a lot of poor avi files out there. mpg seem to work fine most of time. I guess if you want to see a movie just rent it! Better quality and a lot less headaches. Thanks again for the help.
