Here is this print screen of the top movers on Download.com Going up: .Morpheus Running on their home-brewed NEOnet network, this file-sharing veteran surges to No. 6. Going Down: LimeWire Slipping to No. 7 after several weeks at No. 3, this popular Gnutella client is quickly losing traction. |

LW 4.2.6 was a signaling version, meaning that all users using LW version between 3.8-4.0 were prompted to upgrade. This mean LOTS of downloads and bandwidth. LW.com cannot substain that kind of bandwidth so they used the filefront.com system to serve the downloads. Normally they used dl.com only to count the # of downloads, but the downloads themselves were coming from lw servers. Once the number of downloads decrease, they should return to dl.com (I believe). In fact, last week 1 000 000 persons downloaded the windows version of LW, a record. ciao

et voila is 100% correct. Our servers were already maxed out before we signalled the upgrade to the rest of the network. In order to maintain a decent level of downloading speed, we had to host LimeWire elsewhere. We managed 250,000 downloads in half a day after we signalled the upgrade, and the surge is levelling off at about 2 times the normal amount of downloads. Once it goes back to a respectable level, we'll start hosting the files again. Download.com knew we delisted and why we delisted. The fact that they'd list us in the Top Movers as going down is, to put it mildly, insulting. Last edited by sberlin; December 20th, 2004 at 06:56 PM. |

Why dont you get extra bandwidth or something, Kazaa were able to keep up at over 4,000,000 downloads at a point, same with Morpheus back in the days. I do like LimeWire and it would have been nice to see it move up to #2 as for Morpheus, the NEO NET is very good and i will continue to support them and LimeWire. Same with BearShare, they took themselves of Download.com also, why is this, it now downloads direct of BearShare.com ? |

Zaggar: bandwidth is costly. LW could afford bigger pipes, however. Or I heard rumors auto-updates from gnutella could be integrated in LW.... Ciao

Kazaa's installer was a tiny stub that downloaded the rest from the network. We haven't built such an installer yet -- it is very high on our list of things to do, and likely the installer for the next release will be built like that. I can't speak for BearShare, but I imagine they moved off download.com because they didn't want to show themselves as below other p2p programs in terms of downloading. Their main download is probably the Pro version, since that's a more prominent download on their main page. We would get extra bandwidth, but a higher number on download.com isn't enough justification for the cost of the bandwidth. We asked download.com if they wanted to host the files and they declined. Basically, because LimeWire is so popular, we had to delist ourselves from download.com for a short while. |

That is nice to see LimeWire getting very popular, slowly, though it is also funny what CNET did by putting LimeWire in the "Top Movers" section even though they knew the reason, oh well s**t happens... Morpheus is getting slightly popular too as weeks go on, as people really find out the power of NEO Network. |

Just wanted to pop back here and say we're back on download.com (most of the time -- when we see our servers getting overloaded we revert back to FileFront) -- and that is minus a day's worth of traffic. |
