Angry Cdr's & CD-rw's won't play on tv

I downloaded some movies finally!!! and some videos...finally!!!
put them on cdr's and cd-rws and watched them on the pc...

Went and put the discs in the dvd/cd player for the tv to check for clarity...ALL were blank!!

I put them back into the pc and some played...the files I deleted from the pc didnt play on the disc...

Soooooooooooooooo...why were the disc's blank for the tv?

Does this mean I can only watch these downloads on the pc?

I trust that the movies didnt burn on the dvd-rw's because they were too large?

This stuff must be easy to correct....I'm doing this for 3 days and I'm getting to the point were it may not be worth doing this...

Can someone help here?

It could be for multiple reasons. The 1st 2 that come to mind is that your source material was in a format that your dvd player is unable to play; ie: ntsc/pal/secam
Some dvd players don't play cd-r's/rw's. Or some don't like some brands of cd. Or you've burnt them too fast. Video is a highly sensitive format. Much more sensitive than audio. Try burning your cd-rw's at the MINIMUM SPEED. I've had this issue before. I reburnt them again & they played fine.

Default DVD Players

Just a small point, as koufax07 did not say what file format he recorded.

As most of us know, there are numerous computer video file formats, e.g. avi, wmv, mpg, mov, etc. In addition, there are even variations within the established ones, for example, your PC may be able to play one type avi file and not play another.

However, to best of my knowledge, which is shaky in this area, DVD players will only play mpg files, unless you have an enhanced machine that can see other video formats, such as DivX.

Then you have LOTR’s problem of screen formats, i.e. PAL (mainly European) and NTSC (mainly US), SECAM is French and, as such, can be ignored.

UK Bob

PS. I won't mention DVD Regions (of which there are eight) because you are recording your own DVDs but suffice to say that a DVD recorded in one DVD region will not play in another.

Unhappy Dvd's cd-r , cd-rw's, cd+r, cd+rw

Okay ...this is where I'm at...using all the advice I got from yesterday...

I only used movies, videos etc w/the mpeg avi for movies (I beleive)
Cleaned out the bogus stuff....

The movies not only played on my CD+RW....but i transferred them to CD+R...all is well...

Then i went to the TV and tried to play them on both DVD player /recorders I have ... nothing showed up...it read the cd as blank...

Tried burning them to the DVD+RW and burning same stuff from pc to DVD+rw...

DVD+RW disc was not acknowledged in pc as being there to burn...

So we have gotten clear movies etc to fit AND play on my pc from CD+rw and CD+r discs.....

Now do I have to 1. use other DVD-R or DVD-RW discs? instead of DVD+R DVD+RW discs?

2 is there any truth that BOTH of my brand new dvd player/recorder vhs player/recorder/combos won't play certain dvd formats?

I think we are close here to solving this problem....

Then i can start helping other people out when I can...

TY

This may sound like a stupid question but are you sure that when burning you chose to make a video CD and not just a data disc?

Ok...good question....

I have the data discs.....so I knew not to click on that...

There was audio....video....and a 4th option...I am using sonic NOW...I am not home so I'll go look online for these choices...I know when I clicked on 1 of them it didnt work...

Now you have me thinking....
But they copied to the CD+RW and then the CD+R...hmmmm

Any input on the + or- use of these discs?

Have a look in your set-top dvd player manual to find out what formats it can handle. Some can play dvd+ & some can't.

What format did you burn them to CD. Was it VCD or SVCD? Some dvd players don't play svcd. Also, vcd uses mpeg-1. svcd & dvd use mpeg-2. So you wouldn't be able to use mpeg1 to burn to dvd unless your softw converted it. ie: the conversion required for the vcd wouldn't be able to be burnt directly to dvd. It would need to be re-converted. So basically start from the original file(s).

I 'think' some pc players won't play dvd+ disks.

If your set-top dvd player can play rw media, then why not do your trials on that rather than R (write once only) media.

Can your burner burn DVD+ media? Some burners can't. What brand & model of burner ae you using?

I am using the Sonic RecordNow...I checked and from what I did was create an image from my harddrive....then made an exact copy...

there also was an option that had the picture of a video camera...I didnt use that one...

well I will check the manual on any limits on the type of disc to use...

I will also check into the camera video and see if the dvd works w/ that...

It's a start.....I will also check the dvd players to see if there is a restriction on that...

It also appears that this Sonic Record Now burns in a double layer to save space and convert easier...
We are learning fast here...

Umm ... Sonic Record Now is the burner softw. What brand & model of burner hardware do you have?

The camera burn is for just that (if it's similar to Toast.) It's for connecting cameras & recording the material to disk. I think I tried it once but don't need it. I can't remember much about it.
