Is there a reason I can't play these files. I am trying to lauch them through Windows media player?

Because windows media format is rubbish! Either you don't have the right codecs or the files might be corrupt. Go to M$'s support & find codecs for WMP. Else try another player like VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (choose nearest mirror site)
