For some time I've had my songs listed under my name in my shared folder but it still doesn't come up any which way I do a search for the artist (me) or song. What could I be doing wrong?

Peerless: if you enter your own IP and port into the Direct Connect search box, you can see your own files. Cool eh?

If you're trying to direct connect with your friend .. it'll be difficult if you're both firewalled! If your own ip shows up on the Direct Connect search window then you should be ok. Some other hints: How to Direct Connect, Browse & Chat
