Default Many unwelcome downloaded folders produce p2pnetwork.exe virus

Ok, I think I have some info.

Here's how it occurs:

1) Sometime while downloading from Limewire, hundreds of mass produced "mock" file folders (mine were zipped) appear in the Shared folder.

2) After a restart, an application tries to SETUP: DO NOT CLICK NEXT!!!!!! Click CANCEL.

3) I noticed this virus disables regedit. Go to the Windows folder and you will find a little grey rubiks cube thingy. It is a sortcut that will open regedit.

4) Do a search for the string: p2pnetwork. After each find, delete it. Keep doing this (there were 12 in my registry).

5) Restart in Safe Mode. Run regedit again. Search for string again. Should be only one this time.

6) If you have a maintenance program like tuneup utilities, that's great because you have to get into the msconfig startup area. Delete all occurences of p2pnetwork.exe.

7) Restart. Check registry for occurrences of p2pnetwork.exe. Delete if they are there. Recheck startup pgms. If p2pnetwork.exe is stil there you may have to restart in safe mode again and repeat. It wil work, but it may take time and patience. I HATE THIS BUG.

Good luck, I hope I've helped someone

Default no bozos p2pmetwork virus is real

Trust me, if anyone gets this thing, they will be glad for those instructions. You just don't get it because you haven't gotten the virus.

I had to do those steps last night for the second time in a month so it is likely other people are getting the virus.

If the funny guy knows a shorter way, or anybody has a better cure for the p2pnetwork.exe virus comng through the gnutella network, please post here.

no bozos.

Every time i start Limewire and there's a new shared folder called 'completed' (400 winzip files). I have downloaded a wrong, 851,7 kb winzip file. When I close Limewire it pops up again!

I don't know how to fix it, every time the new folder comes up, I just delete it. How can I find and catch the virus.
Should I just re-install Limewire?

Please, if you think you have a virus, you think your anti-virus agent is corrupted and you KNOW you shouldn't be in the registry because you just plain don't know what you are doing.....use an on-line vurus scanner. I recommend Micro trend. It's free, easy to use and it works. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I tried the trendmicro but it did not remove the files. they seem to replace themselves when deleted. When i was on limewire it show that the common folder was in the root of my drive. it has disabled my task manager, regedit and my msdos program. will i have to format and re-install everything to get rid of it??
