bpmax - No, not "going for an enrollment drive there". I see no forums here involved with helping people clean up their computers, so I pointed him towards the best one I knew of (it's called attempting to help someone, in case you're confused). And, yes, I'm well-aware of the fact that - if "TheTakeover" obtained his copy of LW from a legitimate source (IOW, if he didn't get a cracked/hacked copy of the program from some flaky site or a non-official version off a P2P source somewhere) - LimeWire doesn't install spyware. Due to the fact that the guy doesn't seem to be able spell or punctuate correctly (and has an unfortunate penchant to revert to all caps), I wasn't going to take the time to explain all that - because I believe that - until and unless he ever gets a clue as to how to secure his computer - he will have spyware/adware/trojan and virus problems for all eternity regardless of what programs he chooses to run. Hope that clarifies things for you. Pete |

I guess you are using the wrong program. What spyware protection program are you using? Try Spybot, Ad-aware or Spyware Doctor. These are all reliable and free to use. You can download them at www.download.com Last edited by cool boy; June 4th, 2005 at 01:41 PM. |

Takeover, Do you have any 765.5Mb or 399.0Mb files in your shared directory? If so you are infested and have at least the 'W32/Sdbot.worm.gen.h’ and tons of intrusions (like Wintool and 1800search,) that would drive your spyware app' up a wall... Check out CoolBoy's thread on it: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=38705 (It also has a solutions & suggestions post...) Last edited by moderntechnician; June 4th, 2005 at 03:52 PM. |

actually, SpySubtract marks some of the limewire files / registry settings as either spyware or adware, specifically these files/registry settings (as indicated on my computer, which is Windows XP, Service Pack 1 FILES C:\program files\limewire\limewire20.dll REGISTRY all are in HKLM\Software (Limewire) HKLM\Software\Limewire (Sharman Networks Ltd) HKLM\Software\magnet HKLM\Software\classes\magnet HKLM\Software\classes\magnet\shell\open\command (Grokster) HKLM\Software\classes\magnet\url protocol Personally, I think SpySubtract is being over cautious - remove any of these files/registry settings and limewirse either fails to work properly (eg Bitzi look up fails to work). Remove the file limewire20.dll and Limewire refuses to start up. I've added these to the "whitelist" which means they are ignored during a scan. Other programs such as adaware, Spybot S&D and microsoft anti-spyware don't show any problems. One of the files ocassionally gets caught by panda software. I guess the manufacturers of these different products are divided about what these actually are. I certainly don't see any of the above as spyware. |
