burning dvd's

I have a dvd burner and a cd player. when I copya movie to play on my tv unit I get a reading saying insert cd. I know the home unit works because of the cd'sIpurchased I can play them. I only get the error message when I try to play something I have recorded from lime. What am I doing wrong.
