converting avi and mpg files

I have been downloading movies but I want to convert them to be able to I burn them to dvd. I also want to watch them I my dvd player attached to my t.v. I have Nero and upgraded to the newest version, but I can not seem to be able to convert and copy to dvd.

use Alcohol 120%
