Exclamation Weird results from searches - spreading!!!!

Today, for no obvious reason, my LimeWire search function started bringing up large numbers of porno spam files, with a file size of 878.8 kb, regardless of the keywords used for the search query.

Has anyone else run across this problem? I keyed in "Walter Cronkite" as a test and got a bunch of teen porno files.

Yeah, I had read the Virii sticky, but none of the symptoms reported there correspond to the issue I face, where the search function is producing results that I did not ask for.

First, forget about looking for answers, run your anti-virus scanner and clean your PC. It doesn't really matter if what the virus is doing is slightly different to what it has done before.

If, as I suspect, the people behind this virus are deliberately trying to bring down the P2P network then they have the resources to "improve" the type of damage it does.

Protect your PC as best you can.

I understand that it is theoretically possible that a virus has entered into my copy of Limewire to produce these strange search results (but have no other effect on my computer). My question, however, is whether any other user has experienced the same issue of the search engine turning up large numbers of irrelevant results, all the same size.

What type of file is it? If they are all the same ( like exe. or mov. ect) you could filter them in LW options.

Actually, the files that come up are not the same size, they come in clusters. Perhaps 10 results will be 878.9 KB, but there may be a cluster at 293.0 KB, as well.

After further searches, I am finding clusters of results at 1,827 kg and other file sizes.

k so there's a slight variation in size from the ones in the link I gave above but probably something similar. If they are in clusters then that sounds hazardous/suspicious.

Either that or it's a new autospamming run by a system related to a porn site. autogenerated spam results Your report does sound like a new problem to hit the network.

I did the same search (after deleting .wmv from my keyword filter) & got similar results. So it does sound like a new autospamming set up.

Hmmm ... it sure does look like autogenerated spam. I tried filtering out search results with wmv in the file name, but the spam continues to appear in the search window, including files ending in .wmv

The difference between this spam & the other people are used to is these ones show up with their own name & not a replica of the search criteria.
