Cannot play dvds

I am new to Limewire and I have burned a few movies that will play back on my computer but not my home dvd player.I am using the dvd-r Sony disks to burn on, which have played in my home player before when I have borrowed movies from friends.One of the files that I have burned from Limewire was in mpg format, which played on the home player,the other was in avi which didnt play.I have tried to convert the avi, using the any converter software, but it still wont play in the home player.Im at a loss on what to do.Any help would be appreciated.
