banmicrosofttoo: You're right. It goes without saying (;robably) that you CAN filter easily - I just enter ".exe" in the filters/text area - and I never SEE a SINGLE .exe. The standard thinking was always "don't download executables," and Limewire even pops up a warning - but it seems now the biggest problem is these damn zips/rars. I imagine they're inherently "safer," since they might not "self extract," - whereas an executable could/would. But filtering both would be great, if you could attach a size parameter (allow all BUT) to ANY type file we knew as a community was "bad." |

I just wish Gnutella was an open network for music like Napster used to be then we wouldnt have to worry about viruses/worms or the junk files people stick in it. Virues cant be helped. Users put them there not Limewire. I simply filterout what I dont want, and all fileters do is hide the files, it doesnt make then disappear from the network. so to fuss over it is a waste of time in my opinion. If you see the size of the file is not right then avoid it. |

ok heres a brain teaser then: what about the bigger files that are infested with a virus? how would you filter those out by size? any exe can contain a virus or a zip file of any size or extension. Yes, I know we need filters to search. Remember the I Love You Virus? A simple viruses embedded in an image file that cause destruction across the web. Trojans/worms/viruses oh my. Nothing a P2P app can really do about them. in the end it still boils down the users that put them there. New users get hit because they dont know any better. They see a file they want and automatically down load it. This one is easy to spot but the bigger ones arent unless you scan before downloading. |
