Limiting my bandwith I have just started college and i have come to realize that the school has limited its bandwith for P2P file sharing making it impossible to download anything from programs like limewire and DC++ or anything like that. I understand why the school is limiting its bandwith for this; and that is to stop illegal downloading. I have stoped illegaly downloading for some time and i currently use limewire for perfectly legal reasons. I want to know if what the school has done is legal. Is this not an infringment on our freedom of the internet? If anyone has any answers or possible ways of getting my school to stop limiting its bandwith please email me or continue this post for other likewise students to read and discuss. |

Hi Stider2009 As far as I know, the School has every right to do this, as your using your schools resources, and they have the right to control them any way they wish, as the bandwith is for educational purposes only, ie to look up information on the internet, my daughter's school has even blocked downloading anything at all unless the student has been given permission Then they must have a password inserted to be able to download Sgt |

sgt' i am sorry to hear of your daughters situation. And forgive me for my own lack of detail of my own school and their so called values. I am at a business school named Bryant University. It is a growing university and it is one of the best for international business in the east coast. The campus is very high tech and a laptop is issued to every student ( the cost of which is in the tuition for the school; The tuition includes the laptop, room and board, classes, electricity, heat, ac, cable, and an internet connection.) WE ARE PAYING FOR OUR INTERNET in the tuition. Should we not have the rights to have a stable internet connection that allows us all of the things any normal person can get to on there home computers? One of the reasons why i am asking this on limewire is to find some physical rights that show why we should be able to use P2P sharing. Any ideas or thoughts? |

Hi Stider2009 You should have the right to use The P2P networks, but I think the University Is Blocking the networks to protect itself from People using the bandwith to download loads of files, also from possible Legal Action (Not sure on that but it could be a reason) Another reason they could be doing it is to stop viruses getting on the network (Don't Know Enough about your network to say) Sgt |
